  • non gun defense?

So basically, I know absolutly nothing about firearms... at all!
Partly because I live in the city, and mostly because I am from Canada. A country that is not all that into guns. Besides from hunting that is.

Now, although I actually like the fact that almost all guns are either illigal, or near impossilbe to get a lisence for, and that we have much tougher gun laws then countries such as the US, I can see the need in a major SHTF scenario for protection.

So I am wondering what suggestions you would have for people who live in not so gun friendly countries?

We do have a pretty good BOL - 24 acres of mostly bush... I was thinking maybe dogs could be a good first line of defense - They can keep gaurd and be a pretty good deterant. Maybe set some traps up?

    any thoughts?

The first thing that came to my mind would be some type of bow.....either a good compound or perhaps a crossbow. Not sure if that would be a truly a defense type weapon......

Archery, Black Powder, Pepper Spray, Hand to hand, Stick Fighting, Cane (as in walking canes) Fighting, tasers/stun guns, Knives or other edged weapons such as hatchets
each have there disadvantages but each have there applications. I believe no matter what you gun laws are you should be versed in several if not all of these anyway. Guns are mechanical devices and mechanical devices will fail.

All above suggestions are good. I would consider taking up "target shooting" as a sport/competion. It would lay the ground work for purchasing at least a 22lr pistol or rifle...and 2000 rds of ammo.

I would look into a good pellet gun , I don't know if they are legal or not . The newer ones pack a pretty decent punch , wont kill someone , but it will make them think twice . If they are thinking twice , they are probably going to move to easier pickings . Dogs are great , but unless trained well , they can be an opsec hindrance . If people can hear your dogs , then they know their people around , so if they aren't trained to not bark , they will announce their presence , maybe even when you don't want it . I personally have a few dogs and I encourage them to make noise though . I want people to know they are there and people can tell from the bark that they are decent size ( over 100 lbs at 1yr hehe ) . When I make the move to the country , I will re-educate them on how and when to announce their presence , until then , I want the world to know that my house is protected by God , guns and my dogs and you can meet any of the three if your unwelcome .
If you want to protect the acreage , look into bushes that are thorny and can thrive in your area and climate and ring the easiest paths . Most people are like water and will take the easiest path , so if the easy way is covered in nasty sticky pointy things ( mother natures barbed wire ) , they will once again think twice and move to easier pickings . The best defense is to have them pass you by . Also concealment of the major paths and roads , start working on out of the way access to your BOL , dont make it a nice easy here I am path/road . Make it work and once again most will pass by .

"I want the world to know that my house is protected by God , guns and my dogs and you can meet any of the three if your unwelcome ." - ha ha I like that one. Dogs are a good idea. You might even choose to visit the US and go to a local flea market. Remember, compared to Canada, gun laws are pretty loose. I've seen many guns sold with no questions asked. So, you can get anything from a bolt action .22 to a Yugoslavian SKS. I'd go for the SKS and maybe a good hunting rifle. Then, unfortunately, you would have to smuggle these items back to Canada. Hide them well and keep them maintained. Slowly stock pile ammunition and supplies (and of course, hide them too). If you think about it, if the SHTF scenario actually DOES happen, there will be no law or government to prevent you from having these weapons. Craig's list could be another avenue to find weapons.
