  • Mosin Nagant

I got a Mosin Nagant in a trade. It has a 27" barrel. If anyone knows, how can I tell what model it is? 91/30? What ammo does it use? 7.62x54R? There are no marks other than the armorer 's initials and the many serial numbers (none match). If it is a 7.62x54R, is it typically an accurate rifle?

I also have a short (carbine?) Nagant. Need info on what model it is as well. It already has a Monte Carlo stock. Wow, for a short rifle it sure is heavy, around 11 lbs. How is the accuracy on this one?

Any help is appreciated. I have pics, but I have never loaded pics to this forum before.

I have an M91/59 model, which is just another type of Mosin Nagant, they are accurate and have plenty of power for hunting just about anything in North America. 7.62x54R is almost always the correct ammo, there are a few rare examples that shot another caliber (I think it was .308) but those are exceedingly rare. There should be some kind of mark just behind the rear sight, and that would tell you where it was made. You might check out http://www.surplusrifle.com/mosincarbine/index.asp and http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinID.htm

On top of the reciever right before the rear sight, you should see some stampings from the arsenal.

Check these sights for the stampings and markings.

      Hope this helps.

Oh, forgot to add that I have two Mosins, a 1943 91/30, and a 1948 M44. Both are Russian, and are a ton-o-fun to shoot! Just remember that most military surplus ammo for these rifles have corrosive primers and the rifle MUST be cleaned as soon as possible after each range session. You can not put this chore off until tomorrow.

Hi gents, Thank you for all of your help. I find that I have an M28 and a T53. I can't wait to try them out after a stop at the gunsmith's house. I have a few rounds of "mildly corrosive" ammo. I understand that "mildly" means "like battery acid." They will get a good scrubbing after they are tried out. Next are the "Mausers" I have accumulated; both converted to 7.62. Both are very nice looking. We'll see how they shoot.

Bill the mosin is a joy to shoot, if you got yours out of storage make sure you get all the cosmoline out of it. its a bit of a job but the first time i did it it took me only an hour or two and two to three beers :-), the ammo in small quanties i can get for about $0.50 a round so its not cheap but the first round i ever shot out of mine i killed a doe with it. it has become my new favorite deer rifle. in fact i will do a how to post on the cleaning of the mosin at my website burgersandboomsticks.com next week
