Bug out bag rifles

i posted this in the go to rifle thread, but seeing this makes me feel like its pertinent to this conversation. this is my hi-point 995ts. shoots a 9mm round. can hit a target at about 100m. nothing fancy, i know hi-point is a name with a stigma, but i have experienced nothing but good things with this rifle. and i have heard nothing but good reviews from other owners. so, if your pinching pennies, i suggest this. mine was $270. My fiance got it for me for my 29th birthday, she wanted to get me an AR but we aren't rich, and this was waaay more in our price range.

I have shot the 223 keltek and it would ring the gong at 300 yars on a regular basis with a cheep little red dot. Uses AR mags and flods in half. Nice carbine.

There is somewhat of a stigma attached to the Hi Points, however, if you have good luck with it, it goes bang every time you pull the trigger and you can handle the weight, it's perfectly acceptable.

Sometimes (as I've stated on several occasions) we focus in more weapon wise on what we "have" to have and ignore the fact that someone is comfortable with it and it works for them.

Take vehicles, BOVs, as an example. I've heard it has to be 4WD, okay, I pretty much agree with that. No computer and on a carburetor. Not really agreeing with that as I don't consider it essential. "But what if EMP blows out your vehicle?" Well, then I'm screwed along with probably 90% of the rest of the preppers in the world. We can't all afford to buy an older vehicle and modify it like was depicted in "Patriots." Some of us just don't have that kind of money, technical know how and believe our funds could be better spent in other directions.

And the same goes with a weapon. If you are comfortable with it, it goes bang and you bet your life on it, who are we to say you are wrong? Just like a particular person who thought an AR-7 was the greatest thing since sliced bread. He can go on with his bad self and carry one. For me though, I wouldn't be comfortable with carrying something that light and would prefer even a Hi Point over a .22. But to each their own and I can't complain about the choice he made. However, when you attempt to sway a beginner decision on a rifle by claiming the merits of something that may or may not be sufficient for self defense in my opinion, I draw the line. But a Hi Point isn't as bad as some let on, kind of like Taurus in that regards. And the 9mm out of a carbine is sufficient as a self defense caliber as well. Just know the limitations of same and you will be fine.

So no worries about the "stigma" associated with Hi Points. Even some dealers will tell you they aren't as bad as folks let on. And many that own them say they are dependable. And just like any firearm, you sometimes get one someone took a little more time with and sometimes you get one made at 4:45 on a Friday.

My son bought a Hi Point carbine as a beginning survival/home defense rifle. It's been reliable and pretty accurate at it's intended range. I think it would also make a good rifle for someone who may be a little recoil shy, or for someone who is not a gun person. Now he is wanting an AK-47 and plans on keeping the Hi Point for his wife.

I have a Hipoint in .40s7w so it and my pistol shoot the same. My only complaint is no high capicity mags.

bug out bag rifle is the one you can count on the most. My bag consists of my sidefolder ak47 and.22 marlin around my neck and my daly .45 on my waist.

i have to say that i like my hi point. i hear the pistols are junk but i have also heard the opposite. for the budget prepper the carbines are not a bad option. i will say that i will eventually go with the AK as my primary defense weapon, but for now i definitely sleep better knowing that i have my carbine near by. its better than no gun at all. and its kinda nice buying 9mm ammo, its cheap, and if a 22 can drop a man, i know a 9mm can do even better. plus, its an ugly rifle, but ugly in the way a battle ax is ugly haha! something about the ugly that makes me like it.

I really think it depends a lot on what you expect to encounter as you bug out. I personally want to be prepared to defend against a gang of criminals armed with AK 47s. In my opinion, if faced with bad guys with AKs, I want at least an AR 15. Our military, uses the AR and in many instances they still feel outgunned because of the small size of the caliper. The 9mm is a respectable pistol cartridge but it is not a true rifle cartridge and does not have the energy needed in a combat setting, especially at the longer distances mentioned. Or against drug crazed gangsters with AK 47s. Follow the standard of the military. In my humble opinion, the AR 15 or an AK 47 is the minimal standard for a battle rifle. If you are going to be in battle as you bug out, the AR or AK are the RIFLES you should be toting.

On the other hand, if you do not expect to be involved in a self defense situation, it probably does not matter which rifle you pack. In that event, then a .22 LR would work - especially on rabbits and other small game. Personally, my AR will not leave my side until I get to my retreat. Then I will be carrying the big guns.

Folding Stock AK. Full size rifle goodness in a compact package. Many versions of the side folders even allow full operation of all controls and the ability to fire while folded.

i keep this rossi "matched pair" in my truck for bug out, or emergency. its definatly not my go to gun, but it will provide in an emergency. .410 from one barrel, and .22 from the other. its a youth size so taken down its very small. since this pic was taken i have drilled the stock to hold .22 ammo in the stock, and have a stock sock on it with 10 various rounds of .410

i would like to get a high point due its ability to fold, and the 9mm ammo but honestly i never thought i would be saying that until i had the oportunity to shoot one. accurate at 100 yards. or enough so that i could resonably defend myself. i'd prefer my lever 357 carbine, but its not exactly compact

How reliable are the Kel-Tecs? That would be my primary concern.

Me? I have a Browning Auto-22 with the barrel cut down to 16.5" from the stock 19" with a 4x scope on the barrel-mounted Weaver rail mount.

I have 2 of the Keltec sub2000 in 9mm and have put over 3000 rds through them without an issue. YMMV

ugg, let me correct myself. i said "i would like to get a high point due its ability to fold".....what i ment was i would lie to get the KEL-TEC due to its ability to fold.

A friend of mine has an AK underfolder that is sweeeet! That would be ideal for a bag but very, very hard to find in my area.
