Thoughts on Bug out Bag rifles:
I have gotten particularly fond of the Kel-tec Sub 2000. It folds to 16" long and can use handgun mags and it fits in a back pack or under a jacket.

I like the idea of your side arm and your rifle sharing backup mags. The Sub 2000 comes in 9mm (glock or beretta) and 40 cal (glock).

In 9mm, you can hit pie plates at 100 yd and torso shots at 175 yds using just the iron(actually plastic folding) sites. Also 9mm is less expensive to become proficent with than 223 cal.

It isn't an AR15 nor is it trying to be. But at $300 new, I think it is a deal for the Survival minded. And it only weighs 4 lbs empty.

I attached a pic of my two Kel-tecs. Both are 9mm glock (as are my side arms).

The one on the left is modified with metal high point front site, stock extension, attached mag pouch and picatinny rail. As pictured with bag has 191 shot capibility (4x33, 2x17, 1x15, and 1x10 rds).

The one on right (wife's) is stock with the exception of a 4 rail system and green laser with 2x33 and 1x10 rds.

I was checking that rifle out myself a few weeks ago at a gun shop. I think it could have some good applications as a bug out rifle with its weight and small size when folded. I also love that it takes the Glock mags and would work well if you're already carrying a Glock sidearm. I seriously considered buying it on the spot but alas I had just picked up a G19 so the sub 2000 will be waiting for another payday.

Have you put any rounds through them yet. Wondering about the reliability? Have not seen any locally to handle or shoot. Like the concept. Wife would probably like to shoot too.

Haven't found anything yet that it wouldn't shoot reliably. I got one for my wife because of size and concelibility (BOB). But once I got to shooting it, I got one for me! Who would have thought a gun with plastic sights would be so accurate! And it is fairly cheap to become proficient with as it is 9mm. If you can hit 175 yd consistantly with it in 9mm, maybe you won't need to stock on many 223!

Kel-Tec makes some interesting weapons. Another one is the SU-16C which shoots .223. I have heard they are accurate out to 200yds, but I have never shot one.

I've been a fan of these for a while. A few years ago, when I was shooting defensive carbine matches monthly, there was one guy who always showed up with one, and he could hang right in there with the rest of us. Never saw him have any malfunctions, and it was very accurate.

I know each state has different laws, but what is the general rule for carrying a rifle in your automobile? do you need a CCW? I was thinking about breaking down a ruger 10/22 and putting it in my BOB in the BOV - (I just luv all the abbreviations. LOL)

There really isnt a general rule on that, as the laws vary GREATLY from state to state.

"usually" all states allow you to transport your rifle (unloaded+locked), my answer was always "I was going to the range" if a nosey cop asked, if you have a trunk, it makes it "better", now I do know some states have an absolute ZERO tolerance for transporting handguns, which I do not understand...

Not a rifle, but have you guys seen the new Kel-Tec KSG shotgun coming out at the end of the year? It is bad azz! Holds 14 + 1, and its nice a short. I think they got all the bugs worked out. I will own one. Check out this youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwN8jHSEhCE

These look interesting. My swat team has a mix of AR's and MP-5's. We were able to get targets out to 200 meters with the MP's. The targets were 1 foot square head sized targets. It all came down to basic shooting skills. I was looking at find something to store in the car to get me home. I would be interested in how well the shoot at longer distances. Thanks for the information.

My M4 breaks down in 5 seconds, reassembles to fire in 10 seconds, and will conceal either under my arm, under a jacket, or in a gym bag. So why be without the very handy $150 .22lr conversion unit for the AR-15, available from Ciener Firearms? google for them and check them out.

Still, I find it comforting and convienent that my rifles(Keltec Sub2000) and my sidearms (Glock 17) use the same mags (from 10 rd single stack to 32 rd double stack). Plus 9mm ammo is very common and may easier to scavenge. MHO, YMMV.

I have always been a fan of a handgun-rifle combo being the same caliber. For years my go to travel guns were a pair of S&W 2.5 inch 66's and a Rossi 16" .357 carbine or the same rifle in .44 mag with a pair of Smith 696 3" 44 specials. Never once felt undergunned.

My son just bought one of these in .40 to go with his glock and loves it.

Yes, the Kel-Tec, with subsonic rounds, would be a practical choice ...

You said it was for a BoB? ... For mobility, stealth, weight, size ... Henry US Survival Rifle (AR-7), with ~380 rds of Aguila subsonic and another ~220 rds of CCI AR Tactical 22LR loads.

Anything that makes noise will give away your position ... Keep yer dinkus in yer pants (yer gun in yer pack) and try not to look "well equipped" ...
... Hang a toilet seat on the back of your pack (until you hit the deep woods) ... Make it look like "there's nothing to see or have, here". Push a shopping cart that looks like it is full of trash and junk ! ... Just do not look tasty or engaging, at all ... head down ... seemingly oblivious ... don't even look at anyone ... Look like a mental patient !
Of course, I will have a .410 derringer, up my sleeve, loaded with #4 buck.

... Back in Y2K, on the forums, we were talking about Bugout Vehicles ... The "winner" was a guy who posted pics of an OLD sky-blue chevy light pickup, with dents and rust and a dilapidated ~white (and rust) camper-shell with a broken window. ... TOTAL STEALTH.
