    the ruger 10/22 rifle?

Reason I ask is because you can get tons of ammo at wal-mart real cheap. I know it might not be the most powerful of weapons but when it comes to survival, the more ammo the better.

Fairly reliable. The flip down back sights tend to break easily.

Heres my answer to that question "See pic"!

I have 6 10 round clips and 4 30 round mags, the stock is by Uncle Mikes and is very solidly made, the scope is a Simmons 3-10x40 and is dead on at 75 yards.

Cabelas has a sale on Federal bulk .22 long rifle ammo right now, you get 4 boxes of 36 grain hollow point ammo 525 rounds per box, for a total of 2100 rounds plus a free ammo storage can.
I just got mine deliveered last week and so far I can't tell the difference tween it and some CCI stingers I have.

I owned one about 20 years ago, sold it years ago. I just bought one for $189. for survival I think the .22 is the weapon to have. easy to shoot, you can carry lots of ammo, and you dont blow the rabbit apart hitting it with an AK round

I have a 10/22 that I left as-is with iron sights. It is a good knock around rifle, that, like other Rugers, is built like a tank. I have 22 rifles that are more accurate ( scoped Marlin 60, Henry lever), but I like it for woods walking or fun at the range.
At this moment it's kept handy, with two magazines close by - one loaded with CCI Stingers, the other with CCI Velocitors.
If i could only keep one 22LR rifle, it would be the 10/22.

If I could only have 1 gun it would be the 10-22. I love them and their simple takedown and their shootablity!

Would this be a good "starter" weapon?

Kind of general purpose, "Beat it, Zombie", down a rabbit, cheap $ to feed...?

Cheap to feed, get up out of here, hit a rabbit, kind of deal?

It is my opinion, and just my opinion, that every serious rifleman should have a Ruger 10-22, and a Winchester 30-30.
                  Everything else is negotiable.

                    while i like the 10/22
my marlin 60 has been stomped into a mud hole and back since 92'.
and i got it used, so who knows how much abuse it took prior to me trying to break it.
Its not mag fed, which is a down fall, but with 17 rnds of 22lr. it does just fine as a small game getter.
i was telling some one recently how it went dang near 1k+ before i even sprayed it with lube, it was a gritty, greasy mess,,,and would hardly chamber a round.
I tried to break the thing. It would fire single shot,,i had to push the bolt/charging handle forward. to get it to feed.

and to boot. accurate as all get out.

just my 2 bits , ......i'd get a 10/22 if it wasnt for me having 2 others already.

The .22lr is almost a necessity in the armory and the Ruger 10-22 is one of the best. Straight out of the box it's a great small game rifle. And of course it's possible to sink well over a grand into if that's your style. A standard carbine model with a decent set of glass on top easily gets the job done on squirrel and rabbit though.

If not the 10-22, then I'd also recommend a Marlin 60.

i've had 2 10/22s and a marlin. I'd rather have the marlin for general usage.

I personally have a marlin, that fires short, long, and long rifle rounds (I have heard many 10/22 are long rifle only, dont know that for a fact though). It is my save ammo and (near) silent killer (22 shorts are barely louder than an air rifle). Ammo is cheap, so anybody can have more than 10K rounds EASY.

@Ken: do you have side mounted iron sights on that weapon in the pic? I can't see them on the right side, I ask because a collapseable stock weapon is "usually" someones close range weapon, and a 3x scope seriously effects the ability to use that weapon in ANY structure close range work.

                          Just my 2 copper pieces.

                            No!
                            No side mounted.
The scope has quick release mounts, the folding butt stock snaps into the full length position very solidly so it can be used as a conventional rifle and then just remove the scope and fold the stock and it makes for a short light close range gun.
The folding stock also makes it easier to carry in heavy brush without the extra bulky length to the stock getting in the way, this stock makes the gun lighter to carry and I like having this scope, even when removed it is useful, it can be used as a spotting scope!

When I turned 21, the first gun I bought was a Ruger 10/22. It's pretty accurate, and with a 30rnd mag it's a lot of fun as well. Mine has see through scope mounts so I can use the iron sights or the 3x scope. Still have my Daisey 22 I got for my 6th birthday. That little gun still shoots like a champ!
