  • Windsheild Test

I did this in 2008 and found it going thru some stuff and thought I would share.
I have had a lot of experience and training in shooting into windsheild but one day I got to wondering what would happen if I was in my truck and needed to shoot out. My son who was in autobody scored a cracked but very useable and still strong windsheild from the same type of 05 chevy truck I drive. We measured the distance from the passenger and driver pointing a weapon straight ahead out the windsheild and marked the spot on both sides on his windsheild with sharpie markers and used that as our aiming point thru the glass. We built a wood bracket to hold it and set in on a table. We held the muzzles the same distance as we would be shooting from full extension over the dash/steering wheel. We made sure we had full wrap around eye protection!
He fired a G19 9mm 147gr flatnosed reload and I fired a G17 9mm 115gr+p JHP Remington. We both aimed center mass of the target at 7ft the approximate distance a target might be in front of the truck posing a threat.
The results were that both bullets deflected upwards and hit the target in the head to the side depending on the curvature of the windsheild.
As a sidenote we noticed that the flatnose put alot of glass framents into the target and the HP soaked them into the cavity.
Lessons learned (1) aim low shooting out (2) wear glasses (3) very little glass backsplattered into us at all (4) the cost for this test was very little with resourcefulness (5) This is FUN!:)

The one thing you forgot to mention is that as soon as you pop one off in the cab of your truck, you're probably going to have blood running out of both ears. It would be a lot like sticking your head into a barrel and firing off a round. If the sound didn't get you, the compression wave would.

You are correct I did forget that portion however if you scream/yell it will open it up some allowing for partial decompression. You will need to do the same in enclosed rooms. It also works with flashbangs and grenades for anyone who is still in the profession. Hearing loss is better than the other options.

I've fired a .45 inside the cab of a closed up F150. No hearing protection. No issues.

I fired a 22 rifle in a toyota single cab truck as a young man, a 410 derringer in a bathroom and a 9mm in a very small hallway, and an M16 in an enclosed room and had alot of issues with pain and ringing! Thats interesting on the 45, wow

Just for clarification.... no issues meaning nothing other than the initial "holy crap that was loud" reaction. No dramatic damage or anything. Its definitely not something I'd want to do on a regular basis mind you, but I'd do it if I had to without hesitation.

I take back the yelling comment for shooting thru the glass. Swallowing busted glass that flies backwards is no bueno. Still good for the flash bangs etc.

Thanks for the info, I wanna come play at your house. I shot a .357 revolver from inside a Toyota pick-up once. Like the others it was holycrap that was loud. I even killed the coyote.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I remember a thread I read about how during shooting situations adrenaline helps to protect your hearing. Let me see if I can find a link to it.

In one of the magpul dynamics classes I attended we were doing this drill in a junk car/s with two shooters shooting front and side windows. No concussion problems, no splatter problems from the windshield. The drivers and passangers side windows discintegrated at the first round in our impala.
What amazed me was the number of rounds the windshield took and only spider webed or chunked out.
The rear window much the same. The car was uses as two different sets of shooters (driverside-passenger side)front two different sets of shooters rear. we only had three junked vehicles for the class so we used it to full potential.
Hearing protection was squishies and safety glasses and gloves.

Audio exclusion was not a factor here, nor was concussion. I was lucky enough to be a fiirst round passanger front shooter. A second round drivers side rear shooer. Good expierence we also did shooting over, under, and cover and concealment drills with the impala. This was a fun class and wish I could take again to continue training.

Was your experience with front windshield round impacts the same as my results? and with what weapon?
That sounds like fun. I knew about the side windows from training and shooting close range into them and had shot into the windshields from the outside during training but this was my first experiment inside to out. I understand the more power the less deflection but haven't actually experimented with that yet.
