  • Gun Question

hey guys..not going to pretend i know much about guns, however, my better half is a cop and she is needing a back up weapon. i was told a xdm springfield 40 is a damn good weapon. was wanting something that will fit her hand, be safe, but accurate. something she can get comfortable with. she is good with fire arms having been in the military eight years and shes a great shot. her primary is a 10mm glock which she is not all that happy with. any suggestions or review on the springfield?

I would look for an indoor/outdoor firing range that has handguns that you can rent to shoot. Shouldn't be too hard in Texas to find.

Have her ask her fellow LEO's (especially ones that are similar in stature) if anyone has that particular handgun or any of the Sheriff's Deputies.

Do you mean back up as in a second gun to carry while on duty?

If so an XDM is too large in my opinion.

She'd be better served by a compact or subcompact pistol.

Another thing to consider is that you could get a Glock for less right now. I own an XD-9, which is the precursor to the XDM, and I love it. 18 round mag, and it goes bang every time I pull the trigger. I don't particularly like .40's though. I was at the range, and a guy was there with the Springfield .40. He was using reloads, and I don't know if he screwed them up or what, but he was getting jams every third shot, and I mean the "take it apart and pry the case out of it" jams. I have heard that .40's don't like reloads, but I can't verify that.

I'm a Glocker but if I wasn't it would be the XDM. The women in the NRA Women on target program i assisted in teaching loved the XDM in 9mm.

Well my hat is off to her if she is using a 10mm, it is a heckavu gun. Most female officers find it too difficult, this is why the FBI dropped it as their primary weapon.

May I suggest a downgrade for her primary, as if you flinch while shooting in a public area, it might be my kid you hit instead of the bad guy.

As for a back up, I would recommend a revolver also, but NOT a .357. As a backup, it will be a snub nose, and .357 really needs 2.5" barrel, preferably 3 or 3.5", to get all the benefit of the round. If you do some internet research, you will see a snub nose .38 SPL packs almost the exact same punch as a snub nose .357, without all the over loud BANG and recoil.

Well, just my 2 copper pieces.

OH, and tell her she is pretty darn tough in my book for using a 10mm for daily carry. :)
