Add a couple bucks more to the price of the WASR and get as a minimum a Yugo. Or get really familar with the mistakes Century makes in the WASR's before buying one so you can check it out well.
I don't own one anymore but at varying times I've owned upwards of three. The first one, purchased in maybe 2000 or 01 was excellent, shot accurately right out of the box, no worries. Had a friend get trounced in a breakup and her man took all their gear and she ended up with nothing. What good is a survivalist without a rifle? So I traded that to her for some help.
Their are some good WASR's out there.
You want to check the following:
1. Bring a small carpenter's square -the one that looks like an "L". Place the gun on a table sights up (remove the magazine and it will lay like this). Place the square next to the front sight assembly and get an idea of if and how much out of level it is with the barrel. A GOOD portion of the time these come from Century with the front sight assembly CANTED. It's not always a super huge issue, but 2 of the 3 I had had this problem. Often times you can still get the gun zeroed but sometimes you run out of room to move the front sight. It's about a $100. fix and their is a better than average chance the front sight assembly and possibly also the gas tube WILL be canted.
2. Some of them evidently had this and some of them evidently did not- but check for "dimples" the little kinda oval shaped indentions in the receiver just above the magazine well. On an AK these are there to give support to the magazine. The rifle should have these if possible. Some of the WASR's do not have these and some do. Some will tell you it's not an issue but I've seen one without have malfunctions while shooting prone and resting on the magazine (what used to be taught as an all time no no).
3. Dry fire it several times. More times than not the trigger is far from smooth. A fairly easy fix but again a PITA.
A friend's new WASR had small metal filings in the back end of the receiver behind the trigger group. We checked the bolt carrier as Century has been known to GRIND DOWN the top of the bolt carrier to make things fit when they have put them together FUBAR and the bolt carrier seemed to be o.k.
If you've never owned an AK I would suggest AGAINST this being your first AK. You'll end up one of these nasayers that complain about them. But if you do buy one, understand upfront that- no offense meant- you are buying the absolute bottom of the barrel as far as AK's go when you purchase a WASR.
I've seen accurate ones that will group at 300 yards, and I've seen (and owned) ones where I've had to use a 4X8 sheet of plywood on it's side to zero it. Finally using the last of the windage adjustment to get it ON the target!!!
And for the record, I am NOT a gear snob, I have lots of cheap gear and stuff that some think is garbage but I've found to be totally acceptable. Nor am I downing anyone that buys a WASR, I'm simply mentioning my experience with them. I have almost 23 years of experience with AK's, owned a couple of them before that awful boating accident and have done more than a little work on them.
If you can avoid buying a wasr as your first AK, then avoid it. :)Last edited by Lowdown3; 01-07-2011, 08:06 PM.www.homesteadingandsurvival.com

300-500 $ range-
is the wasr 10, used SAR, used /new home build. Few other brands from places like alantic arms etc.
500-1000+$
krebs,vectors,arsenals- used pre bans ( norincos, poly tech( 100-1800) etc)
PTR now makes a 762x39 HK91 clone.
It runs around 800$, from range reports it seems to be twice as accurate as a standard AK. Uses normal cheap x39, but reports are 50/50 on if it will accept standard AK47 mags. Evene so, the AK style looking mags for it are around 10$.
Id be interested in it IF and that IF it used standard AK mags......Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

Get ona these! http://www.jgsales.com/product_info....oducts_id/4241
Or ona these. http://www.centerfiresystems.com/DRA-GUN-B.aspx. These are drag through the mud reliable and still in your price range. 7.62x39 is halfa 308! The AK is superb in its original configuration, full auto for conscript troops, but otherwise, not optimal for your $$$ The commie spam cans of light ball are still plentiful and cheap. If you ever really need it you'll appreciate the extra range and stopping power of the 7.62x54.

When the WASR 10's are imported they are made for a 10 round magazine. Century hogs out the mag well to accept the bigger 30 round mags. My WASR 10 has no "mag wobble" but some do because the opening was cut out too big. Thhis plus the canted sight/gas tube can be a problem. Luckily mine is OK. But it's a crap shoot. DO NOT buy one sight unsen. Ya got to inspect it well."There is nothing so exhilarating as to be shot at without result." Winston Churchill
