Rock Island makes a Rem 870 copy you can get new for around 180 or so. I think its called the m5. I think norinco has one also. for the money you could get real close to a used 870 for that price. just throwing some options for ya. gunbroker is a nice place to browse. Have a good week and watch out for the snow.

I have a Mossberg 590 thats never been shot and I can't get it to eject shells!?!
I have other shotguns and have been meaning to try and take it apart to see whats wrong with but just never got around to it.
Based on this I wouldn't recommend this model to anyone.
I'd like to try a Saiga!
I much prefer my 870 or 11/87.

@ Benn Gleck Don't take it apart yourself. just take it to any gunshop (smaller IS better in this case) and ask them to look at it for you. Chances are they can fix it\or find the problem while you wait. If they don't charge you anything just buy some ammo and keep them in mind next time you want a gun. We did this all the time at our gun shop.Man created shotguns because God created cats.
Man, those Muslims sure are worried about what they eat. I went over there and all I heard was Alohaaaaa Snack-bar.

I went to Walmart to check. They don't carry any firearms at all. It might be a regional thing. They do carry some ammo tho, so I picked up two 550 boxes of .22LR and 100 rounds of .22 CB Shorts. The prices are a few dollars cheaper than Academy on the big boxes.

I have a S&W .12 guage riot gun for home defense/social shooting. In general, though, my opinion is that the best home defense shotgun is the one that goes boom when you pull the trigger. I like the pump action, because it's guaranteed to kick up the pucker factor significantly when you rack it. There have been many, many stories of burglars who have beat feet when they hear that. Again, though, if all you have is a single barrel break down .20 guage, it will work. You just have to be a bit more judicious about when you use it.

@Monel I have a 590a1 with the 20inch barrel. It is very muzzle heavy especially when fully loaded, would say around 10lbs. When I bought it I also bought a sling that holds an additional 15 rounds, needless to say had to get a different sling as it made the gun too front heavy. I dont regret the purchase as it goes bang everytime with minimal upkeep with anything I have fed through it however I woiuldnt want to lug it around for extended periods. If weight is an issue you might want to look into something else.

Agree, just commenting that if you have children in the house or whatever, and you don't want to keep one in the chute, that sound will get someone's attention. I personally keep one in the chamber, but then again, I live alone, so it's not an issue.
I actually learned that one the up-close-and-personal way. My son called me one night, from another city. A neighbor had called him and told him that it looked like his house had been broken into, and that they had piled stuff up in the living room to make another trip. He asked me to go over and watch his house until he got back. I agreed, loaded up the aforementioned shotgun, and went over. Shortly after I got there, a guy pulled up, went to the house, and went in through a window. I positioned myself in such a way that I could watch both the window and the front door. Shortly after that, the guy came out the front door, carrying a shotgun. I racked mine, and put him on his knees. I backed him into the house, thinking I would wait for my son to get there to deal with him. I then found out that he was a friend of my son's who had been called to check on the place. We sat around and talked about stuff until my son got there. I was THIS close to dropping the hammer on the guy. If he had been carrying the shotgun in a position to fire it when he came out of the house, I would have been toast. Lesson learned: have the gun READY before you go into that situation, and don't go into it unless you're ready to fire. In this case, although we have the castle doctrine here, I would have been on REALLY shaky ground. It wasn't my house, and I was outside. I would have used his shotgun as an argument for self-defense, but it would have still been pretty shaky. I would have probably been looking at attorney fees at best.

@Monel: yes it is a regional thing. Last December I was visiting my father up in Wisconsin, SHOCKED at him selling or borrowing all his guns out, so I wanted to buy him a rifle for the farm. We went to Wally world, and nope, they do not carry guns in Wisconsin Walmart (according to the cashier) this is a regional decision. But I put it together easy, (as they do not sell guns down in Illinois where one of my sisters live). Democrat state=NO GUNS, Republican state=GUNS :) OK OK, cant prove that from just 3 wally worlds, but sure was weird when I noticed the coincidences... :)Last edited by Klayton; 01-19-2011, 12:37 AM. Reason: woops dont tell my sister I spelled Illinois incorrectly, LOL

Monel if I may give you another option: Buds Gunshop. By purchasing a firearm from an online source like buds you can purchase the same gun cheaper and avoid paying sales tax. Downside is that you will need an FFL dealer to ship the gun to. Usually they charge a fee $25 to $45, plus the background check you will pay if you buy from China Box store anyway.Stand next to me and you'll never stand alone.

I saw Buds online while doing research. They are cheaper than many places, but I don't think for me it is worth the hassle. I ended up buying a Remington 870 Express from Academy. Cheap and reliable. I broke it down and polished the receiver and slides, cleaned it really good and now it is very smooth to cycle. I will get a magazine extension and I will be set. Thanks all for the help!
