  • Higher scope mount?

Ok, here's my situation. I mounted a scope on my AR 10 with a set of low mounts and it sits right down on the rail, but not quite touching it. A couple of people have said that I should raise it up, but nobody has given me a good reason for doing that. Basic geometry tells me that the higher it is, the more radical the change would have to be to zero it at different distances as the 2 planes get further apart. It's comfortable where it is right now, but raised up would be just fine also. No iron sights on it, so I don't need to see under it. Any opinions?
What a long, strange trip it's been.....

They may be saying that so you have room under the scope so you can still use the carrying handle?
    Not sure...

leave it the way it is. I assume you are getting a good comfortable cheek weld? if so don't touch it. its YOUR rifle not someone else's rifle.

That's about how I felt on it. It's comfortable for me and I think they were looking more at a tacticool angle instead of functional. I was just wondering if I was missing something in this picture. Thanks all for the replies.

my 2 cents is, if it works for you then leave it alone. A quick story, i had a friend with all the great intention in the world, bought me a synthetic stock for a model 788. He switched for the wood one as a gift. The synthetic stock is about a half inch longer, and i went from a very comfortable pull to a difficult reach to the trigger. Before i could get the wood one back, he had a flood and ruined it.

Sometimes it better to leave well enough alone.

              The lower the better.
As you mentioned the geometry is better.
Better cheek weld to the stock.
The mounts will be stronger. The longer/higher the mounts are the more leverage the scope has against the mount during recoil.
