    part 1

"Geez Louise we got a gang of people here now. It looks like a refugee camp around here!" Todd said to Jim.

"Yes I know, I'm sure glad we had that GP Medium and GP Small tents. They'd be a lot of lean to's and hootches in the back 40 right about now."

"Dude, are we really going to be able to feed all these people?"

"Well, yes, for the time being, I'm working on an idea to help that as well. I'll tell you more about it later."

"Did you PLAN for all these people to show up? I mean you don't really seem surprised that we have 20 more people than we planned for."

Jim thought, you mean than YOU planned for. "Well, we've always been affiliated with other crews on the East Coast. You've met some of them, the North Carolina guys, some of the folks from South Carolina and Tennessee. Barney, Rick and their guys come from the crew in Florida. They were part of the original Group years ago. They are completely trustworthy and are squared away. We might have to spend some time getting them up to speed with our SOP's, but nothing major. Just to be on the safe side, we will integrate them with our crew and for the first few months, we will have to make sure no more than 1 of them are on guard duty at the same time. I don't expect any problems, but I don't know all of the folks they have with them and I won't take any chances with our families. I only see one major problem with their guys."

    "What's that?" Todd asked.

"They use AR's, so you know their is something wrong with them!" Both men laughed.

"The few oddball guys are part of a crew I started putting together in this area as a separate part of our main crew."

"Oh, so you were putting together another crew in case we became slack or didn't show up if something happened?" Todd asked.

"Essentially, yes." No one knew about this except for Michelle and the kids.

"So who's the dude that's with Bill?"

"Oh yes, he ought to be a good catch also. Previous SF Medic, now a PA. I've known him off and on for some time now, but he's known Bill for 15 years or so. A very low key survivalist. So, we are doing pretty damn good on the Medical end- 2 PA's, 1 Corpsman, 1 LPN and me with my "Dr. Mengala (sp)" credentials from Quack university for half arsed medics.

" So tell me again how the hell we are going to feed all these extra people?"

"Well, I've always planned for extra. Last year when we bought the additional 2,000 lbs. of rice for part of a community backup plan, this was one of the reasons we did that, remember? I don't think anyone is going to live high off the hog, but I think we ought to do fine. I'd like to get some better housing set up for some of these folks though. I'm working on some ideas for what will become the food problem."

"Alright, well, we got work to do. Here's the deal until you hear otherwise- one of our guys is always on guard duty, never schedule both guards from two of the other crews on at the same time. Move the kids into the living quarters of OP2. Let's move Rick and his wife into the backroom of House 2. Most of the other guys are bachelors or have younger wives. Arrange the living quarters so that one from our crew is staying in every tent. Make sure any families of our guys are in the reinforced houses as much as possible. We need to plan a salvaging run up to my Uncle's barns to retrieve tools, all their firewood and let's get a couple of those old 55gal oil drums he has. We can get Rusty to fabricate some wood stoves out of them. We used something like that up north when I was little and wes was dirt po."

"We sending a patrol out today?" Todd asked.

"Yes, I'll put it together and take care of it, which is why I'm telling you all this. I need to walk the wire first and do a quick once over. When you see Murphy and Rusty, ask them to come see me individually when they get a chance. I want to tell them all the same things I told you, but I don't want it to look like we are having this big conspiratorial meeting."

The retreat was situated in a rural area a couple hours drive from any major city. That would be a great blessing in the coming months. Word coming out of the cities was all grim. People acted all nicey nicey for a couple days until the full reality of the situation hit home- their was no Red Cross coming to help with blankets and donuts, the government was not going to save them. First came the looting. Next was the wave of "revenge attacks." Some of these were very brutal attacks for nothing more minor offenses that happened long ago. Years of anger, frustration and resentment towards their fellow man was boiling over and people were being killed (or worse) over stupid things that happened long ago.

Many would be survivors who were lead to believe that they would do o.k. in the suburbs just outside a major metropolis found that they had to fight an almost constant battle for weeks on end. Scenes similar to the movie "BlackHawk Down" played out time and time again in upscale neighborhoods. Few of these "yuppies" living in these areas were armed, fewer still had the will or the skill at arms to defend themselves. The worst was far from over........
