EMP- equipping Modern Patriots by Jonathan Hollerman

Got this book on kindle format the other day. Im getting back into reading post apoc/shtf fictions lately. Fun times. cost sub 8$
First off lil about the author- guy is ex sere ex military, runs a prep consulting business..etc etc.etc etc like most guys writing this stuff these days .

The pretex of it is to be a fiction with "prep guide" in it. Think how many of us see "patriots" by rawles.
So i plan to review it as both-separate.

    The story -
Over all it isnt bad. Its typical EMP hits type event. Main character has to get home..rescue wife and bug out to a retreat and to family ,save the day etc.
    Ok.
I wont give to much of it away but you can guess theres the peril's of traveling post event, ambushes ugly run ins, and carnage all around.Like most of these fictions our main dude turns into the hero. Yip did not see that coming. In typical post Obama survival fiction him and his group become the saviors of the sub division or in this one the county they reside in .
its got the typical "platoon" good ,bad, ugly conflicts and goes into how fast folks turn native fast.
It wasnt a bad story line, lil better than others but just wasnt WOW thats awesome in my eyes.
what ruined it was what ill review next - his "guide".

The guide- imho he shoulda stuck to the story. When he goes into "how to" mode its plain as day and detracts from the story.
Our hero starts off in town, EMP hits and he has to hold a meeting with all of his co-workers(guess he loves them that much). This takes up a few doz pages of him explaining in depth what an emp is, then in depth of what they should do,,where to go,,when to travel, when to leave(vs just rushing home off the bat). The author suggest waiting and gives the reader the advice of move in the 1st three days. Ok, i agree with that.
Then it comes to the get home/bug out.
This emp hit around his lunch break, then the talk,,then the walk with a coworker/friend to the local shop and stop. Here they supply up. with crowds abounding of course- dont agree with that. Now its time to get home..in the snow to his prego wife!!
At the start he describes his character as outta shape,,iirc 40lbs over kinda deal. Now dude has a 12 mile bug out in a north east/central state.AKA not flat ground. Pushing two shopping carts that are full through 4 inches of snow in dress shoes- he makes it home before dark.

As the story goes other great gems of advice are shown. Main guy whos out of shape carries a SU16(keltec) but uses magpul mags, carries a tikka 308 in his pack and his side arm and mags. This comes in handy when "cattle thieves show up"..Hmmm i think i read a story about that once before....LOL

the bug out- loaded as above him and his pregnant wife have to use bikes to peddle 60 miles through mountains to a farm.......in 2 days while hauling trailers of supplies- good advice id go on bike vs foot as well.

BUT im thinking our hero ate his wheaties that AM.

As the book progresses it goes into retreat set up/defense- something i guess from his bio the author does for his consulting job. I will say this- the guy can dream up a bad a$$ retreat, plan to have the right team members but not one mention of recruiting anyone with medical experience, but he does bring up how much they have "researched" it( and other topics as well....like the choice of an SU16 over ak/ar platforms though he insist others use them)...research i love that word.
As we go through retreat set up/planning/defense it turns into a "buy wise foods/e direct/mre depot" plug fest. But during the story there are many " we canned the fresh deer meat" but no info on how, what kind (pressure or water bath) and how they did it with out power(ill assume wood stoves)
His defense plans after building the dream retreat is to "escape" and fight back to retake it. Ok. It would take a TON of money to build what he wrote about. Yet you can see /feel a jaded vibe from him because he starts uses quotes to describe "survivalist" who think they can hold down a fort and unlike other "experts" his idea is better. though he is constant on people pulling watch!
This is why it started to ruin the story for me. I can also understand the lets make the characters look bad for "researching" vs doing but not in the same page as " john made the great investment to buy 3 years of wise food for e-direct prior to the emp thank god.." but not a pressure canner or a few CATs.
    But they love quick clot/celox!

It could be me,having read so many books like this. But i dont think so.
I went ahead to find out more about the author. He says he is influenced by rawles/tappen when he 1st read them in 04'.......and i read a few interviews with him on some "prepper" blogs. He describes his choice for the su16 as "mine works great.." no one can prove me wrong i shot it once for 500 rounds with zero failure (attitude) and how"low end ARs wont cut it.." so buy a good one.
The interviews turn into buy non gmo seeds(insert website) and into buy wise foods...oh and soon ill be advising a PAW type TV..but i cant talk about that...buy my book.

if you wanna kill some time and read a story thats a lil better than some but has that lil bit of "guide" handbook vibe deal. It'll be worth it(kindle was sub 8$) i wouldnt buy it in print form. its not noteworthy enough to use to learn from post event.

my 2 cents this crop of "new" shtf fiction authors just dont seem to hit it for me like stuff from back in the day.

    ill give it 3.5 outta 5 1995 MRE's.

    YMMV
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

    I will check that out...

I have been reading before bed "Grid Down Reality Bites," by Bruce Buckshot Hemming but I am finding it a bit dry, simple language, and uninspiring.... Too many, no way, that is too stupid for anyone to do, scenarios...

So far, not much has been able to top Danielle Kidnapped in this genre...

    Thanks for the review....

I am currently reading 2 different PAW series. The New World Series by G Michael Hopf. I am currently waiting on book #4 of the series. No a bad series. Has more story lines than One Second After but some of the stuff the main character does is absolutely frustrating. The second series I am reading is Last Stand: Surviving America's Collapse. I just started on book #1 and so far nothing out of the ordinary.
"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

Yeah I was wondering how hemmings books were.
Though maybe we need stuff that isn't so. Heroish ...there was several firefights stand offs it seemed before the hero got to his location and after. With the bad guys dropping like flies.
I liked Max's fiction because heck....he'd talk about a character ....then if that guys patrol got ambushed people took rounds. These others are like the red shirts from star trek. "Hi Bobby....glad your on the team (Bobby lived two farms down and joined two weeks ago) ...were gonna raid the biker gang wanna go........(fast forward) ....how are we gonna tell Bobby's wife his dead...." meanwhile the main cast no matter their skill level go with out a scratch....LOL

I get tired of thank. Honestly.
And what's a wolf hook...this hollerman Guy loves them?

          ...research i love that word.
We hear that word so many times a day it damn near makes us sick.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Protus ever wonder if maybe the problem is two fold. The quality of the authors has slid a little and you have progressed a little. Kinda like watching the first Star Wars movie. Remember the first time you saw it you were like. Man that was awesome cool effects. NOW. Well not so much The CGI is a joke and all the aliens in the bar look like puppets.
