  • Recommendation - Alas Babylon Audio Book

I drive many hours a week for work so I'm always on the look out for good podcasts and audiobooks to keep me awake and between the lines.

I recently purchased the Alas Babylon audiobook on iTunes. I enjoyed the book when I was younger and figured I'd give it another go.

This book is one of the very best published PAW works written. The premise is maybe a touch dated since it was written in the 50s (total nuclear war) but many of the themes still apply. Will Patton, the narrator, does a terrific job of telling the story.

If you have a trip coming up and want a good book for the road I highly recommend this one.

Oh yeah, it's family friendly too so it's a good one for the kids.

Yeah it's good. Got the MP3 a couple years back and listened to it while on a trip with the family.

We call it Alas Bourbonlyon" due to all his references to Bourbon. Kinda like "One Cigarette After" aka One second after.

If the main character in most of these fiction stories isn't a one man killing army, he's a pimp/chick magnet or is constantly pine'ing for cigs, booze, etc. I have yet to read one that isn't somewhat along those themes.

    "Ben Raines, contact us." LOL
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Oh no, you had to drag Ben Raines into this. LOL Series was OK till they started to drag mutant cannibals into the mix......
Man created shotguns because God created cats.

Man, those Muslims sure are worried about what they eat. I went over there and all I heard was Alohaaaaa Snack-bar.

Creepies.... I believe, or some sort....

What's bad was that I read the first one, it wasn't that bad. Didn't even know they had sequels. So I'm at a huge used book store in Jax. I see the 20 or so odd sequels to it they had AND Ahern's "The Survivalist". I'm thinking oh wow, this place is cool and these are cheap. So I load up the truck with them. I read the 2nd Out of Ashes and look at the stack of sequels and think "oh crap." Well maybe "The Survivalist" is better...... "Aaaah man, this sucks too."

Johnstone was out at an SOF convention one year I was there. Was in his mid 60's I'd say then (1995'ish). Had some early late 20's looked to be an "escort" type female with him at his booth giving out copies of Episode #26 or something of Ben Raines kills everyone and all the young girls love him sequels.

Johnstone did come with the "tri states theory" and the whole idea of the Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington state uber homeland for survivalists/survival utopia concept. At one point I know he was actively trying to get small groups formed around the country. Who knows, maybe he was trying to win a "bet" like L. Ron Hubbard did........ :)
