Part 24
"Steve, disconnect the radio and stow it in your pack quick. Everyone else, check your shi$, make sure we are sterile." Lyle said as the Gomez group approached to within 175 yards of their concealed position.
"How close are we gonna let them get?" Murphy asked.
"We will hit them at about a hundred yards, then we are going to pull out two at a time. If sh%t gets bad, we will peel back until we can break contact. Everyone knows where we are meeting up at right?"
Nods came from all the crew.
"Remember, this isn't a mad minute, I want at least 4 of them going down in this initial volley. They seem to be moving good and are alert, I bet they chase us, be ready for it." Lyle said.
The Gomez patrol advanced carefully, stopping every few hundred feet and scanning the area ahead of them.
Lyle got nervous about the crew's camouflage. Was it sufficient? How close would they be before they saw them? They would have their answer soon enough.
Raul Gomez was the six man in the eight man patrol. One of two sons of the infamous Dejesus Gomez. Dejesus came to the United States in the 90's from Nicaragua. He fought in the 80's war against the Sandinista's and was trained by the CIA in guerrilla warfare. He fought with the FDN under Somoza in several actions against the Communists.
For the last 5 years Dejesus Gomez controlled a small drug empire in this rural area. Cocaine, crack, weed, X, anything they could get they could sell. Drugs bought weapons and Gomez soon amassed a small army of gang members.
After the **** hit the fan, Gomez crew went wild, robbery, home invasion and arson were added to drug peddling. Then those F'in gringo farmers shot up four of the gang, with Gomez other son, Miguel, narrowly escaping on a shot up ATV.
Miguel told his father about the demise of the four he was sent out with. Dejesus didn't take the news well. He sent Raul out with 7 of his best fighters. Gomez gang was modeled after the Italian Mafia. Raul was "caporegime" and had his own crew. They were to torch this gringo farmer's house and kill everyone they could find there, men, women and children. Nothing got in the way of Gomez.
Raul was not going home without making sure whoever shot up his compadres were dead.
The old man farmer revealed that a group of "military guys" were hiding in the woods next to the pasture protecting the cows and that they were the ones that shot up Miguel's crew. Raul got this information after doing some horrible things to the old man's granddaughters in front of him, promising to let them all go if he got the information he needed. Of course after he got the information, he killed every one of them and they torched the house.Luckily Mr. Hansen knew nothing more about Jim than his first name. Using Debbie as a go between had worked out this time.
Lyle''s crew shifted positions slightly to try to get as much fire on Gomez as possible. Since Gomez was approaching in single file it would be harder to hit many of them with a Point ambush. Their was no time to re-position for an L ambush and right now it wouldn't be the best bet. A running ambush would be more practical given the odds.
The crew got a good chance when Gomez point man went down to a knee. There was a slight delay for the rest of the Gomez crew to go to a knee, which exposed three of their crew to fire versus the two that had been in view.
"NOW!" Lyle said as he opened fire.
A half a second later the rest of the crew opened fire. The point man and the next two men went down. Almost immediately Gomez was returning fire towards Lyle and the crew.
"Shi$, let's get the F' out!" Lyle shouted.
This had been the plan anyways, but everything seemed to move faster than Lyle had planned. These guys were trained.
Lyle and Steve continued to return fire as Murphy and Barney pulled back. Lyle couldn't be sure, but he thought another Gomez went down wounded.
Murphy and Barney got into position and started firing at Gomez. No signal was needed, as soon as they opened fire after moving, Lyle and Steve pulled out.
"They are retreating, you two follow them, we are gonna flank them. Keep on them and don't let them rest." Raul Gomez told two of his four remaining men.
Raul and another man went wide from the avenue of escape. These gringo motherF'ers knew what they were doing, but so did he.
Two of Gomez men stayed right on the tail of Lyle's crew.
"I think we broke contact. Let's keep moving to Point Charlie. Reload and keep your eyes open!" Lyle told the crew.
As they approached Point Charlie, Lyle made the recognition signal as they moved close. Finally they saw an arm raise out of a clump of bushes and wave slightly.
"Listen, we are gonna try to finish these ba$$ards now, stay here and fight them on their flank after we open up. If we have to pull out, move to Point Echo, everyone is waiting there for us." Lyle said as they left the two man react force and kept moving.
Lyle's crew fanned out on a small rise about 25 yards from the react force. For those that weren't in the best of shape, this running ambush was quite an experience.
Murphy said to everyone- "Focus on your breathing, get your heart rate down if you can." That was one thing they worked on quite a bit in training.
Everyone was now set up in a rough L ambush formation. They would try to end it here. If not, the running ambush would continue.
After a short wait, two of Gomez men came in to view. They were not running haphazardly after Lyle's crew, but moving in quick bounds on the route of escape of Lyle''s crew.
Lyle made mental note as to where the react force flankers were located.
The forest erupted with more gunfire as Lyle;s crew and the react force opened up on the two Gomez men. Both men went down quickly.
"Pull out again?" Murphy asked.
"No, let's see what happens, this might be all that's left of them. We F'ed them up good at the start." Lyle said.
Raul Gomez and his compadre had went too wide in their attempt to flank. Pausing every few moments to listen gave no hint as to where his fighters were or the location of the gringo mutha's.
A dozen or so shots were heard and Raul quickly took a compass azimuth towards the sound of the shots. Now he had them.
