Part 19
"What were you thinking? Your family needs you here!" Kathy said over the field phone.
Jim wasn't having a very good day. "Sometimes when you do the right thing, you still get crap for doing it" Jim thought.
"Listen, be quiet and listen." Jim went on to tell her the whole story.
"Sorry. Listen, why don't you just bring them into our house and stay there, then you won't have to quarantine." Kathy said
"No sweetie, we can't do that. Everyone
agreed to this SOP years ago when we discussed our bio plans. I'd be a crappy leader if I called executive privilege and came in. Besides, you guys could get sick." Jim replied.
"We don't want to be here without you." Kathy said.
"It's only a short period of time. Listen, can you get together some clothes. These girls look to be about 9 and 6 or 7. Some of Bobby's clothes may fit them. Maybe a few teddy bears or stuffed animals or something. Hell I don't know, we don't have any girls? I'm sure they probably don't want to play with Bobby's tractors though" Jim said.
"I'll find something, what do you want me to do with them?" Kathy said.
"Give them to Barney. He's going to put a bunch of stuff at one of our drop points for us." Jim said. They were talking on a hardwired field phone, so comm security wasn't an issue.
"I love you, stay warm." Kathy said.
"I love you too. You can call me here anytime you want. Over. I mean, goodbye." Jim said.
Bill, Steve, Jim and the girls settled into their quarantine camp. After security was set up and comm established with the retreat. Bill gave the girls a thorough physical.
The girls still were not talking, still seemed in a coma like state. They would ocassionally eat and drink, but never in front of the others. You had to leave food and water in front of them, then turn around, go to another part of camp and act as if you were doing something before they would even touch the food and drink.
Bill reported their condition to Jim.
"They don't seem sick, but I don't have the equipment here to do any serious tests like WBC's, etc. They are severely traumatized though. It looks like they were heavily abused in more ways than one." Bill told Jim.
Tears filled Jim's eyes.
"Are they going to be alright?" Jim asked.
"Physically, yes. Emotionally probably never. They act like they are in a coma. I'm frankly surprised they are eating and drinking anything." Bill said.
"How do you think we can connect with them? I want them to know we are not going to hurt them." Jim said.
"Tell them. It's not like they are retarded now or something, they hear you, they might not totally understand though." Bill replied.
Jim, Bill and Steve used the time outside the retreat to do further scouting of the general area. Every couple of days they would take turns stand hunting also.
Jim came in from a foray and told Bill and Steve, "you know, I don't always get something, but I've pretty much always have seen deer out here."
Bill replied, "my guess is that everyone is hunting them big time."
"That's what I was thinking. It's gonna be rough on the "If I get hungry I'll go hunting" types that didn't put up food. And we are WAAAY out there compared to most people. If we aren't seeing a lot of game way out here, I bet you'd be hard pressed to find them near the suburbs." Jim said.
