2011 and 2012 had been an interesting years politically. The big political parties were being rocked by independents and aggressive speaking fellow party members. The election year was off the charts with protest and scandals on both sides. In the end both the Democrats and the Republicans were spilt in two, both fighting for whatever power they could hold on to. The election pitted a fairly new member of senate against the Democrats standing president. A man of 1000 empty promises from what many were screaming as election day closed near. The debates were heated to the point that the standing president on more than one occasion was heckled to the point that studio security was regularly leading people away. It was a flash back to the heated 2009 town hall meetings that the democrats were using to push health care reform that year. A look down the nose ,let them eat cake mentality that was running rampant through congress and senate that year. People were not happy about it. On the other end of the spectrum the standing President's competition was labeled as a racist tea party supporter, which was used against him at every chance by the media.
Like any other election is was up to the people to make their voice heard at the ballot box. Though as some protesters screamed on TV " it's time for the cartridge box..".
They made their voice heard, but in a way that shocked everyone. The current president was "dethroned" as FOX news reported seconds after the results were in. However the President elects choice of a running mate was not the best one in many voters opinion. A former democrat that changed parties early in 2010. While he was a middle of the road Democrat, that did not sit well with many republicans. Many feared he would lose the election becuase of his weak stance on most of the hot election issues. The biggest issue was the economy and the borders.
The last 4 years had seen a whirlwind of economic woes sweep the country. From large government bail outs,to federal committees being formed to over take and control banking companies that were in trouble of failing. The president himself even forced several large company CEOs to step down and placed government CEOs in their place. So they could make sure they same mistakes would not be made again that the previous administration had made.Since the Democrats controlled the majority it was easy for them to pass most of their reforms . However as timed showed, and unemployment numbers soared it was almost as if they were doing it all to consolidate government power. A huge topic with many conspiracy theorists and talk radio host across the country. One almost ran for Vice President his ratings were so high, and his following was country wide.He had the media means and the backing but like most media personailties failed to follow through.
The border was such a touchy subject after Arizona's following through of its immigration enforcement and the " Battle of bisbee", or so it was dubbed by the media. That almost no one in congress or senate wanted to touch it. Late in 2010 a group of Mexican drug dealers,ex-Mexican military crossed the bored between Bisbee and Nogales in a convoy of 10 trucks in para military dress. They raided two ranches and murdered the families and workers there. From there they headed north where a gun battle with border patrol agents and national guardsmen broke out when confronted. It then turned into a running gun battle back to the border. Over 15 Border patrolmen and Guardsmen were killed and over 20 were injured, it was reported that over 200 of the "invaders" were killed in the skirmish and the resulting riots from illegals in the area.
The backlash caused by this on both sides of the border resulted in a full deployment of active duty troops along the southern border. California was the only state to attempt to stop federal troops from being deployed on its border. The other border states accepted the help with open arms. But as the standing President had stated on TV to those who opposed it " Those American troops are here to protect those border states and restore HOPE that America still has open arms for those wanting to immigrate here with the dream of a new life as an American....". However, the Governor of California was not to impressed by seeing armed troops on his streets. Nor were many of the illegals in the southwest. The Democrats though, paraded the fact that they alone had made the border safe and brought home 10 thousand troops from Iraq in the process. It boosted their approval ratings but not for very long.
Donald had only been back home for 6 weeks when he received a phone call from one of his buddies he had served with in Iraq. The odd thing was the stateside number and Tim wasn't due to be back for another 3 months. Tim had been sent back early as part of the "de escalation" of force program that the President had
implemented in order to secure the borders. Him and his complete battalion had been rotated back to the states to be part of the border security force. From what Tim had said it was more than just Army units being brought back for it. The military units being stationed at the borders were reassigned under a multi service task force. They had every branch involved.
The President under an executive order had pushed this "homeland" force idea to a reality. Rumors of a "homeland security" force were the talk of the day when this administration had 1st taken office a few years prior.Online movies, news articles all pointed to it as a "brown shirt" style private army to serve the President. It was now clear to many how that force would be built and what kind of soldiers it would be compromised of. Right now the majority of the units assigned were those compromised of engineers, and logistics support units. Their main mission was to help the border patrol, not be on the front lines fighting illegal immigration. After the "Battle of Bisbee" this changed . More and more combat ready units were being rotated into not only the southern border states but also the northern border with Canada.
Donald had been away from home for almost 4 months when Tim called. After coming home from Iraq he kinda went native as his uncle called it. He had come back to a job lined up at the family construction company, but he wasn't happy. He went from high school, to war zone, to bidding jobs in an industry that was failing more everyday. Every morning after his jog he would read news articles on the web, only to walk away mad. He was watching everything fall apart. It was no different than the local political in fighting he saw overseas. He knew sooner of or later something had to give. He just didn't know what.
Donald had got in the habit of going backpacking every weekend. In doing so he ran across several websites online dedicated to it. But being from a semi rural back ground this progressed in to woods survival fetish. He would leave and practice what he had read about or watched on TV. He then started going to area "survival" camp outs that some of these websites hosted. The more he read, the more he went into the woods , the more "awake" he started to feel. It was showing in his everyday mannerisms as well. His family and co-workers would call him " bear" as a joke, and talk with a brit accent at gatherings ," RIGGGHT off we go, down into GLASSSSsssssiEEERrrrrrrrrrr to make it to the swimming hole are we "bear"..." trying to imitate a show he sometimes watched in those days. Even worse was when his brother would introduce him as Jed Eckert. He laughed it off most of the time. But more and more it made him want to be more reclusive. He now understood why Tim would always tell him "opsec bro..opsec" when they used to make red dawn, mad max jokes when they were overseas .
