The Reluctant Gardener - A different sort of survival?!

Boyd, 10 years ago I had what I call my personal Waterloo. Business and relationship wise I seemed to have lead a charmed life. Then it all crashed and burned at the same time.

All I will say in this public forum is I still look at the street people with signs on the corner and whisper "For the Grace of God Goeth I". Praise God that your son is doing good and your life is not where you know it could have gone. I have even more respect for your writing and you knowing you have been to the edge of the abyss and seen what was down there.

How would the world in general deal (PAW situation) with somebody who's deranged, lost within themselves if they deal with it at all?

I think it'd be much like in "One Second After". They would be among the first triaged off. In a PAW community the phrase "you're either with us, or against us" would take on an all too literally meaning. If you're not a truly productive member of the community, you're costing them food, which means life. I doubt people who are too lost within themselves to be productive, or even those that are productive but perceived as a potential threat would be tolerated for any serious amount of time. I'd even say I give them weeks. Not months.

I took a worst case scenario look how my life would have/could have changed if my son had died. As it is, he's been in remission for almost 5 years. Putting this one down on paper over and over is my way of facing my own fears. Also a long look at myself if I hadn't pulled my head out of the whiskey bottle quick enough although its hard not to fall back in.

Whew! I was afraid to ask what parts of that were autobiographical. Praise God your son is in remission! At the risk of sounding crazy, when my son was a baby I had a nightmare that he had leukemia. It still haunts me.

Lol didn't realize there was another story out there with that title. I've rewritten this one so many times and none of it turns out good.. Basically that little house that Kelly purchased right "down the road" ends up being his old house where his wife committed suicide.. Like I said though, this one may be destined to be a 3 chapter play as it's part fiction part autobiography.

While having a discussion about survival, food prep etc with a group of friends one of them brought up in a PAW situation, what can you do for those who just loose it or snap? My answer was nothing. You can do almost nothing until the person is ready for help, and just like you can drag a horse to water and not make him drink, you can't force an alcoholic to quit drinking until he's ready.. Sorta long deep topics that night..
