Part 12
Jonas "testimony" was both revealing and unfortunate.
It was unfortunate because it confirmed several people's feelings and thoughts regarding Donnie. Donnie's actions had already brought him into question with most of the group members.
Jim felt like someone had ripped his heart out of his chest. Betrayal had a way of doing that to you. The bigger question was not what to do about it, that part was clear, but how to go about it.
Jim radioed to the retreat and Steve and Lyle came down to a pre-determined spot on the map to help with the "pickup." Jim was careful not to divulge any of this information over the radio and Jonas was brought into an unused building at the retreat under the cover of darkness.
All the pieces came together now- Donnie acting cagey, the reports of him walking down to the same spot near the wire in the back 40 every day and standing there "stretching", the short radio transmissions Scotty was picking up via the Scout every couple of days asking for a "sitrep" that was obviously being transmitted from an area not far from the retreat.
Jim had Jonas bound pretty tightly with electrical tie wraps and 550 cord. His boots were tied together in several ugly knots, his pants were down at his ankles, he was blindfolded also. To Steve and Lyle, he was quite a site.
"What in the hell are you doing to him?" Steve asked in a laughing tone.
"Hey, I was by myself and I was thinking he might try to run. Ever see a tied up man run with his boots laced together, pants around his ankles blindfolded? Yeah me neither! I wasn't going to take any chances, this bird has a lot to sing about." Jin said.
"What do you mean?" Lyle asked.
Their were all within normal speaking range of Jonas who was laying on the ground curled up in the fetal position. Jim had purposely drug the body of Jonas friend over next to him and put Jonas near him.
"Remember those sons a b$tches that Donnie told us about that were planning on attacking the retreat, here's what's left of them."
Jonas spoke up.
"That lying ba$tard! He brought us up here, said he knew you guys and their would only be a couple people here, but that you wouldn't accept me or Frank so he would go in and shoot a couple of you and takeover! It was his idea! I didn't even want to be here!" Jonas cried.
Lyle went over and kicked the crap out of Jonas. Jim gave him a wink and a nod. Now both Steve and Lyle started kicking him in the head, groin and yelling "Liar!"
Jim gave it a moment then stopped them. He pulled Jonas blindfold down and stared him in the eyes and talked intently.
"Do you really think I'm gonna believe you over him? Someone I've known for years?" JIm said.
Jonas replied "It's true! I've known Donnie for years, his full name is Donnie Jones and he lives in Middleburg at 21 Elm Street, his wife's name is Elizabeth but he calls her Lizzy..."
Steve and Lyle were in the background talking openly.
"I think the legs are going to be our best bet. The meat came off of them easily on that last guy. And without a freezer we can eat the legs one at a time maybe, use quickclot and a tourniquet to keep him from bleeding out before we eat the other one...." Steve said. They were great on improv.
Jonas was crying again.
Lyle went over and grabbed and squeezed his legs a little bit- "Yeah you may be right" he replied to Steve.
Jonas pants were wet again, he sobbed "why won't you believe me? I've told you the truth!"
Jim waved Steve and Lyle a few feet off. He felt Jonas was now ready.
Jonas gave up every bit of information he had to include a rally point they had decided on, materials Donnie had snuck into the retreat, people he planned to approach to help him, etc.
Jim felt sick to his stomach over what would have to be done.
This was certainly not exactly how the fiction stories usually went of a survival group living happily ever after. It was human nature that some people were more selfish than others, that some would be willing to do anything to be "on top." Usually the ones that wanted to be "on top" were the same ones that did not want to put the WORK in that was required for real leadership. They saw leadership as an opportunity to display power and fuel their pride and ego issues. Real leadership was not that way at all. The Lord Himself said "whoever wants to be great amongst you, let him be your servant." A true leader is serving his people, teaching them, helping them, guiding them and where necessary correcting them. The motives must be clear- if this is done to "look good" or to "be someone" people sniffed that out quickly. A good leader was also humble.
