Part 5
Scotty rode with Debbie and Mr. Hansen down the dirt road towards the meeting site. Without glancing all around and looking paranoid, Scotty kept a good look at the surrounding wood line as the truck ambled along the road. It was fairly slow going now, almost a month without county graders working the road had taken it's toll.
Two clicks on the radio confirmed that the truck was approaching and that the security team was in place and ready. This was followed within a few seconds by three clicks on the radio from Scotty, confirming that it was just the three of them and no one was observed following.
The truck pulled in slowly and Scotty pointed out where to park, just outside the tree line in an open area next to a fallen down old house. When the vehicle was shut off, Scotty stepped out and waited for Debbie and Mr. Hansen to get out of the vehicle, then motioned for them to follow him a few yards into the wood line.
Just as they got a few yards into the wood line two men approached seemingly out of nowhere. One walked directly to Scotty, handed him a rifle and nodded to him. Scotty went to a cover position 30 yards away and went to ground.
"Jimmy, this here is Mr. Hansen, the man who lost the cows." Debbie said.
"Very nice to meet you sir, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Maybe we can help you with that." Jim said.
"Nice to meet you too, how do you think you can help and why?" Mr. Hansen said.
"Well, we all live in this area. We are all concerned about looters and people coming in from the cities, stealing, killing and causing trouble.." Jim said
Debbie cut in "They's had some trouble around there place also." She said.
"What kind of trouble have you had?" Mr. Hansen asked.
"Well, we had about 4 men come down our way asking if we had drugs, women, etc. We politely but firmly said we didn't and asked them to leave nicely, they refused, drew weapons and we were forced to defend ourselves." Jim said.
"Did you kill them?" Mr. Hansen asked.
Jim did not answer verbally, but Mr. Hansen seemed to get the point.
"Let me say this sir, the last thing we want is to have to hurt anyone, but when these low life's attack us, or steal food like what happened with you, I think their is no other way to deal with them. Do you have children or grandchildren?" Jim asked.
"Yes, three grand young-ins, they are staying with us right now. Two girls and a boy." Mr. Hansen said with obvious pride in his voice.
"I'm not trying to frighten you sir, but you need to realize that the low life's that killed your cows and attacked us, are the types of people that would kill or rape your granddaughters. Most of this type of people have no respect for human life, have no m****s or belief systems, don't know right from wrong- and don't care either- and would kill you so much as look at you. I think when we get down to it, these are the types of people ALL of us want to keep out of our area, wouldn't you agree?" Jim said.
"Well of course, I still don't see how this ties in with my cows?" Mr. Hansen said.
"Well sir, if they would slaughter your cows like that, their's a good chance they would have killed you, or your grandkids if you were out there. And the meat and milk from those cows could keep your family alive, so by killing your cows they are actually lowering your chances of survival as well. We would like to help you catch them, protect your cows, and keep low life's out of this area." Jim said.
Mr. Hansen was old, but nobody's fool. "So your offering to protect my cows and possibly catch those responsible for killing some of them, what's in it for you?"
Jim smiled, "Well, you lost three or four cows when they killed them right?"
"No, it was better than a dozen of them! Some were hauled off somewhere and some were shot and left right in the field!" Mr. Hansen corrected.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was that big of a loss. Well, you've probably heard from Debbie that we have a lot of extra people staying with us. All of the men and most of the women, are ex-military and have skills in weapons and tactics. We have the manpower to keep watch on your herd 24 hours a day 7 days a week and the ability to respond to any threat that's brought against them." Jim said.
"What about at night, how are you going to see the cows at night?" Mr. Hansen asked.
"We have that covered sir, we have the capability to guard your herd 24 hours a day." Jim replied.
Debbie chimed in "He ain't messin around Mr. Charlie, these boys got their act together. Jimmy's a good man, he'll treat you right."
"So what do you want for this help?" Mr. Hansen asked.
"I'm told your herd is literally hundreds of cows, if I remember correctly cows calf once a year? How does two cows per month sound to you?" Jim said.
"Two cows! Well that's way too much, that would bring at least $2,000. now." Mr. Hansen said.
"Mr. Hansen, I'm sure you realize that money is of no value right now and for the foreseeable future. Sooner or later someone will want to barter with you for a cow or for some meat. We can help facilitate that as well, give you security while you are making your transaction. If it's feasible, we can setup observation points so that we can also maintain some security around your homesite as well, who knows, next time they might attack your family instead of your cows. Given the state of the nation and the fact that someone with a big herd like you no makes you better than filfthy rich you have a lot to protect.
"I'll have an answer for you day after tomorrow. Can you come to my place then?" Mr. Hansen asked.
"Sure, we can do that." Jim said. Stepping towards Mr. Hansen, he shoke his hand and said "I think this will work out good for all of us, I appreciate you meeting us today. Scotty will ride back with you guys to make sure you get home safe. Goodbye." Jim said.
"Goodbye Jim." Mr. Hansen said.
"You need me for anything else Jimmy?" Debbie asked.
"Come by tomorrow morning and we will give you some gas. Thanks for your help. Scotty will show you where to drop him off at." Jim said.
They waited till the truck pulled away. Jim and Barney stood up, looked around and listened for a moment, then headed out of the area. 15 minutes later, the two security men got up and left in a different direction. All four were back at the retreat about an hour before dark.

"It's going to be dark soon, are we going to get there soon?" Julia asked.
"It isn't much farther. Just be glad we got his van and we aren't walking anymore." Andrew said.
"I still can't believe you shot that old man and woman Andrew, you could have just let them go." Julia said.
"Listen, things have changed, WE needed this van to get up here didn't we? Those old *******s owed us this van. If the truck hadn't been shot up, we could have taken that all the way up. We are lucky to be alive." Andrew said.
"You haven't seen Jim in a long time, do you even know if they still live there?" Julia said.
"If they don't live there, we will."
"But you guys haven't really talked since our wedding. If we had known we would have needed him like this, you could have been more friendly with him." Julia said.
"When we get there, just let me do the talking and stay in the van at first, don't let them know my brother and his wife are with us also." Andrew said.
"Why not?" Julia asked.
"Because we don't have food for ourselves, let alone them. And Jim's probably still pissed that I owe him money and stopped coming out with the group." Andrew said.
"What group?" Julia asked.
No ****, would she ever get it?
"It was a survival group Julia. Jim, Todd, Bill are all apart of a survival group, they've been preparing for something like this to happen for years now." Andrew said.
"Years? Were you a part of this group?" Julia asked.
"Not for a while. We all had this big group in Florida almost 25 years ago now. Some people moved out of state, some just stopped coming out. Jim moved up here, started another group and salvaged part of the old group. You've saw his place years ago, they take this serious." Andrew said.
"What if they don't accept us?" Julia asked.
"I'll kill them." Andrew said.
"Are you serious?" Julia asked.
"No, they wouldn't be as easy to kill as that old couple. We will have to see what happens. Maybe if I killed Jim we could talk our way in with the others." Andrew said.
"Do you know the others?" Julia asked.
"A few of them, Todd and Bill. They probably haven't gotten any new people in since I left." Andrew said.
"Aren't they armed?" Julia asked.
Andrew smiled, "yeah and then some."
"So what makes you think your just going to kill them?" Julia asked.
"I was just talking out loud, I don't know what's going to happen. But we will know soon enough, only about another 10 miles." Andrew said.
Scotty rode with Debbie and Mr. Hansen down the dirt road towards the meeting site.
