  • Canine first aid

Has anyone looked into canine first aid at all? I'm looking for general first aid book (can be general or german shepard specific). Maybe a trauma kit for my pooch as well. I have other preps I want to lay in first but want to start researching this. Just found out this week to use "Pumpkin" (canned) to help bowel movement in dogs. The Pooch had some surgery this week and the pills he's taken stopped him up a bit. Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks
    Robert

      Just a few tips.
      Pain relievers:
Aspirin and Ibuprofen can be used sparingly. They can easily cause stomach ulcers.
Tylenol is toxic to cats (can't remember for sure about dogs, but I wouldn't use it.)

Pain isn't always a bad thing for animals. We can give people pain relievers and tell them to "stay off that leg" or whatever, but we can't do the same with animals. Pain is a natural response to protect an injury. If we give a dog with an injured leg enough pain reliever that the injury no longer hurts, they may do things that make the injury worse.

I am not a vet, but I did work for one for about ten years.

I have a friend that has a 13 year old Lab. She is having problems with her hips, he told the doctor has given her acetaminophen for the inflammation and pain.

Wow, acetomenaphen (Tylenol) is not known to help with inflammation in humans. Guess it's different in dogs? Sure it wasn't ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)?

I have 2 cattledogs. One's 13 y/o, 1/2 Akita & 1/2 cattledog. The other is 11 y/o and full cattledog. They don't get around as much as they used to when they were younger. I've got them on daily dosages of glucosamine. I keep them updated on their shots. Other than that, the only other first aid I carry for them is my Leatherman Wave because cholla cactus has a nasty habit of getting on dogs out here in the desert. I have found that the Leatherman is the real deal for pulling cactus out of dogs and people. They've never come across a porcupine but I'm guessing a Leatherman would come in handy for that situation as well.
"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.
