  • Medical book recommendation

So I wonder if their is a medical book that you could pick up at start looking at symptoms a person is having and have it go from there to possible problems the person is having.

In other words, not having to have a clue that it's impetigo and go and look up impetigo in something like a Merck manual.

The ideal for me way that it would flow would be something like this-

    Coughing-

Possibles: cold, congestion, asthma, pertusis, blah blah blah.....

I often times look stuff up thinking maybe it's this, but then only 1 or 2 of 10 symptoms fit.

For us non medical types in the PAW, is their a reference book that will lay it out like above?

    TIA on any recommendations.

Sorry, was away from the computer for a few days.

One that might work for you is Common Medical Diagnoses: An Algorithmic Approach By: Patrice M. Healey and Edwin J. Jacobson Mine is copyright 1990, but there may be newer versions.

      Just checked on Amazon...

What you're looking for is the PDR.
        Physicians Desk Reference.

Often med school hospitals will get a ton of them shipped in gratus and they can be available for free otherwise they get trashed.

Worth buying, even if you get a 5 or 10 year old one. Medicine doesn't change that much over that time period.

I have multiple PDR's. Many docs will give you their old ones.

One auction lot I got at Ft. Stewart a good while back was 4 pallets of books, mostly medical books. Won that lot for $20. :)

Probably a pallet of that was PDR's in various shapes and forms- many had to be tossed.

Found a neat series called "Medical clinics" in there however, quite a few volumes.

Whoa! $387 FRU's.... Too steep for my "book" budget... But I did pick up an older, 2nd Edition (1994) on eBay for only $4.17 with FREE shipping... Thanks for the tip! I figure not much has changed in BASIC diagnosis of the human body since 1994.... LOL!

There is one more left at that price...

Wow, I didn't even look at the price of the newer version. I have the 1990 paperback version with a white cover. It didn't cost me more than prob $50 back then as I was in medical school and had no money.

I guess finding an older one like mine would be better. Prob hasn't changed much as symptoms are symptoms.

Okay, made it in to the office today. Here is another book that might serve your needs. A little more easy on the wallet.

Still $52 though. I have the spiral bound one, but it looks like they don't make those anymore.

Thanks for the second book tip... For my skill level and budget, I once again went cheap and got an older 5th Edition for $3.17 with free shipping on eBay.... Will keep an active search out for the newer 7th Edition. eBay had one for $22.99, but have other expense needs at this time...

                    Rmpl,
Nothing wrong with pinching the copper clads. Older editions will still work as symptoms are symptoms. I just looked on Amazon to see if they are still being published. For $5-$6 you got a couple good med books.
