  • Mastering Your Medical Kit DVD review?

    Wondering if anyone has seen the "Mastering Your Medical Kit" DVD put out by the people who did "Summer of Survival" webinars and that SouthernPrepper1 markets... Any reviews? Is it worth the $97 or so dollars?

    http://theprepperproject.com/SHTFMedicalTraining/

    Would really like to have a good quality, high-definition video teaching on SHTF medical as a refresher, as my training in that area is long ago...

    Southernprepper1 did **kind of**, he said it was good.

    Through The Prepper Project/Chet Womach site

    Just the DVD's are $56.95 includes shipping

    DVD's + suture kit $106.95 includes shipping --- This is the cheapest package deal

    -----------------------------------------------------

    On Amp3 site the DVD's are sold separately for $35 + shipping so you would pay more if you bought them separately. So would pay $70 + shipping from Amp3 site for both DVD's.

    Amazon has a practice suture pad for ~$36 + $19 for s/h = $55

    -----------------------------------------------------

    The suture kit in the advertisement video from The Prepper Project can be found here:

    http://sim-vivo.com/simsuture.html $44.95 + S/H

    On this site there are 7 videos, click on training guides to see the videos. This site sells other practice kits.

    If you want just the practice suture pad:

    http://www.sim-vivo.com/simpad.html $29.95 + S/H

    Here is the pdf training guide from sim-vivo on suturing

    Discover the power of deliberate practice in achieving mastery. Explore the concept of practicing 10,000 hours or more and its impact on skill development.

      I am glad the DVD's are sold without the kit... I only saw the whole shebang for $97. I have plenty of sutures, as they are one of the many things that doesn't expire (less maybe some absorbables).

      As for a $50 suture pad, a cheap pigs foot has always been a decent replacement for human hide... Doesn't need to be pretty, as it is an emergency or SHTF event if I am doing it and not a doctor at a walk-in clinic or ER.

          I got the DVD's, Izzy, and SAM Splint on Tuesday 9-2-14.

          Izzy = $8

          SAM Splint 36" = $10.50

          Shipping = $9

          DVD's = $14.72 each

          I like to break down the numbers for people.

          Med Kit DVD--Suturing DVD

          The med kit Dr. Pruett demo's is the one he sells, it comes as a roll and you can see it here: http://stores.amp-3.net/amp-3-outfit...ld-separately/

          Its lined with pockets that have a label on them. You can use a sharpie to write on the labels and organize it however. The labels can be cleaned with alcohol pads, there might be a ghost image of the previous letters on the label. The roll has 2 grommets that you can use to hang the roll kit by. There is elastic running down the center of the roll that you can slide other items under to secure them. All in all I like the way this roll is made with the labels and what not. I have not been able to find a roll exactly like his with the labels and grommets so if anyone finds one let me know. I like the roll and how he has each module for a treatment i.e. musculoskeletal, dental kit, trauma, medication etc.

          He covers the various items that come in those pockets, how to apply an izzy bandage on someone and on yourself. How to use a SWAT tourniquet as a tourniquet as well as in conjunction with the SAM Splint. How to take a piece of the SAM splint and use it on a finger in conjunction with an arm being splinted.

          One of the modules is for wound irrigation, syringe, syringe cup, betadine. He shows how to make a betadine solution for irrigation using the bag it comes in, betadine pads, and water.

          Knowing how to apply an Izzy bandage, how to use a SAM splint/SWAT tourniquet is worth it to me.

          I have attached the list of items that come in this med kit: Med-Kit-Checklist.pdf

          Info/How to cards come in the various modules and they used water proof paper to print on.

          He shows you how to tie a suture and practice these movements with paracord while watching tv or whatever, he explains the type of wound to suture and not suture (and why not). He then has the guy from the prepper project try his hand at suturing, I found this beneficial. Its also explained how long to leave sutures in and how to remove them.

          The DVD also covers staples, wound types to use them on, how to remove them with proper removal tool and how to remove them with scissors. The guy from prepper project uses the stapler and removal tool.

          Final Thoughts: The med kit video does not make up for actual training, its more about what his kit has and why he chose to have certain items in it. It doesn't teach you what to do about heat exhaustion/stroke, how to handle fractures or sucking chest wound. The suturing video is a great introduction into closing wounds from sterri strips, butter fly, sutures, and staples. All said and done I think the videos are worth the $14.72 each that I actually paid for them.

          Could you learn all this from youtube, most likely.

          I did verify that the Dr. is licensed in Oregon. https://techmedweb.omb.state.or.us/C...tityID=1449862

            Thanks for the review... I was hoping it was going to be more in-depth and procedural. Bummer.

            I wish someone would do an in-depth DVD for "wilderness first-aid," a good legal disclaimer to avoid AMA and license board heat.

              The Dr is USNERDOC on youtube. I have done a couple shows that he has been at and he seems like a nice enough guy. Every time I tried to talk to him though all he wanted to talk about was HAM ;)
