  • Cough and vomit crud going around

Anyone else get this crap? Family has got it and had it for a while now.

No fever, no chills, no upset stomach.

Cough that's not productive but if it's within a few hours of eating will often times make them puke. Seems more pronounced at night, perhaps laying down affects it?

Did a 5 day course of Zithromax that ended last Friday, didn't seem to help.

Normal cough suppressant type stuff has slightly helped the cough.

They said at church this is going around like crazy in these parts.

Anyone else seen this? Anything work?

No vomiting but we had the cough and associated nasal congestion. Dry non productive for almost two weeks then some phlegm just prior to clearing up. Sons cough held on for almost a month. It sounded like he was going to cough up junk but never really did. Tylenol cold extreme helped

Had same stuff myself about 3-4 weeks ago. Very congested feeling, cough and malaise. Never any fever, chills, night sweats or vomiting. Congestion lasted a good two weeks and cough was bad for about the same time then started to get better. Spouse had the cough and did the antibiotic without help (I don't treat her). Finally put on inhaler and nasal steroid to get her cough under control. Many of my patients have experienced similar symptoms. It's a funky virus that's having it's way. If you get it, plan on a good three weeks of cough.

No chance of this being pertusis?

Pertussis, hmm, possibly could be I guess. But, usually there is a low grade fever and the distinctive "whooping" sound between coughs. This is bacterial in nature and zithromycin is one of the drugs of choice. Don't think it was what I or my spouse had, but YMMV. I'll try and find a website describing more about it and post a link.

Edited to add video and link.

Pertussis (whooping cough) is a respiratory tract infection characterized by a paroxysmal cough. The most common causative organism is Bordetella pertussis (see the image below), though Bordetella parapertussis has also been associated with this condition in humans.

Interesting that chart shows Zithromax for a lot of stuff. They did a 5 day course of it last week and it seemed to do nothing.

Course the boy had the cough for probably a week before that and my wife had it for several days by that time.

If they did Zithromax and didn't get better it's most likely viral. Zithromax is helpful for a lot of things bacterial. Watch for fevers, green nasal drainage or sinus pressure/pain. Then there may be a secondary bacterial issue going on or starting up.

                    Thanks.

On the viral idea- wouldn't it run it's course within a week or so then?

Any help in switching over to Cipro and trying that?

There are different types of viruses. A wart is a virus and can last months to years. Herpes is a virus that you have for life. So, each little strain can have their own "lifespan" to some degree. A virus can also cause some inflammation that can continue to cause some symptoms despite the virus being eliminated. That's what happened in my wife's case. She need the inhaled steroid and nasal steroid to reduce the inflammation in her nasal passageway and lungs. Once she started these, she saw improvement in her cough within a few days.

See I had the coughs....drainage ....running nose...green...brown...thick like yogurt snot. Sinus pressure and fatigue ....I'd go three days...then get slammed with aches...fatigue etc. I tried all kinds of stuff. Even my stomach lower gi had issues from it. 6-9 days of pollen and it cleared out....so either that junk worked or after four months my body won.

After an exam our local doc is saying it's bronchitis.

                              protus,

where are you getting the pollen? Is it "local" pollen that we want or is the "generic" that will cover the majority of things?

                              Thanks
