This applies to modern times as well.

Yep had alot of these when I worked for the vet
Irrigation is key to getting it all out of there and cats are even worse with that bacteria
rabies is always a worry but primarily packs which i've dealt with several times in my life with the most recent in the last economic downturn

Nothing to mess with. Several years ago my Daughter got bit at her work, even though she cleaned it and went to the ER it got infected. It took about 6 months to heal. A bite from a small dog could have been life threatening.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I'm an animal lover, but an unknown dog that is threatening in a PAW situation, may need to be put down. One dog could cause major trauma and infection to people and your own protection animals.

That was a pretty good article. My only criticism is closure. I don't think I have ever seen an animal bite closed. They are almost universally left open for closure by secondary intent.

I would also add that the animal should be quarantined for 10 days to rule out rabies, and BZK has been shown to kill the rabies virus. Topically, or during irrigation, it may reduce the incidence of infection by the virus.
