  • Measles Outbreak

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...break/2693945/

Measles is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable infectious disease caused by measles virus.

This has killed alot of folks and altered many more lives.

People will go out of their way, because of belief or ignorance, to expose themselves to all kinds of disease and then mindlessly expose everyone around them. Folks are heading out to far away places constantly for work, pleasure or religion and will never think twice about what is there and sometimes as in this case they thought but consider it ok to get and then expose you. This is something to keep in mind when you head out into public and become exposed yourself. This is exactly how a pandemic will grow quickly with the attitude of Americans.

What would you do if this happened in your area? How would you alter things you do? Work? Kids? Church? Friends?

I was exposed to chicken pox at 25, even though I was exposed several times as a child, and it dang near killed me. I only was given a 50/50 chance of living at the hospital. It was unintentional after we baby sitted for a friend so no harm no foul. I never saw it coming though and even after they called us to let us know he had it i still didnt see it coming like that.

Most of us have lived in a world without communicable diseases. Measles, whooping cough, chickenpox, polio, etc. and let's not forget the increases in STDs all will be a problem in a post-PAW world. Quarantine any new folks coming to your camp/retreat. In today's world, if you know someone has a disease that can be transmitted to you, stay away, essentially you are quarantining yourself from the sick.

So how bad would that monkey wrench called quarantine mess up the initial work and security plans!?!

Well, I would guess a lot less than everyone in the group exposed and sick all at once.

Sure, having a couple members "sick" will add a huge hassle to the rest of the group in regards to all group chores that need to be completed, but the alternative would/could be a lot worse. When reading the Rawles novel, I always thought about possible exposure when the group sent certain members to the barter. If just one group member got exposed, it could take down the whole group.

Quarantine is the only way I see it for maintaining the medical safety, and possible physical safety of the group.

I totally agree and have been trying to figure out a plan and whew is it taxing on the chore side. The incubation time of the various types of known, much less unknown, diseases is something i'm weak on too.

The one who can maintain their basic hygeine the longest wins this fight I think.Good ol' soap and water will prevent A LOT of third world troubles. In my brief but notable experiences with 2nd and 3rd world countries, I'd say being able to wash my hands before eating, sleeping, after using The Necessary, etc. has kept me out of more intestinal trouble than I care to imagine. That and getting as much local yogurt in me as possible, as quickly as possible. Your gut is a biological warfare zone, nuke the place with healthy bugs.

Matt, for most bad bugs a good rule of thumb is a 2 week quarantine will allow enough time to know if the person(s) is contaminated.

Two weeks is a long time to be in quarantine, but even longer for the people picking up the extra chores.
