  • Will you be a Casuality?

This is a follow up to a great post by Matt In OK entitled "Casualty Rates". If you have not read that topic in the General Discussion Forum, read it and understand.

Casualties is something I have pondered over the years, but Matt, your post was spot on, and everyone needs to read that post and ponder the implications.

I have thought many times that the casualty rate will be very high if we have a true PAW. Disease, infections, diarrhea, cholera, gunshots, dehydration, stabbings, trauma, suicide and withdrawal just to name a few. Then you will have just those from chronic medical problems...diabetes, kidney disease, lung disease, known cardiac disease, peripheral vascular disease, cancers, bowel obstructions due to change in diet and chronic pain. You will also see many that think they are healthy find out that's not the case. The thirty year old that is 50 pounds overweight that has to run from the gang only to keel over to a heart attack. The guy that starts having alcohol withdrawal after a week because he cannot have his six pack every night. The nicotine addicts will eventually go through withdrawals as well. We will see STD's blossom due to people having relations with whomever they meet or just because of the increased number rapes. We literally will see Zombies when the antidepressant meds, anti-anxiety meds and other psychotropic meds cease to exist.

I have been paying attention to my patients meds over the years. I practice in a speciality, so I see what the patients are taking before they get to me. Many are on what we call poly-pharmacy. That is multiple meds for the same condition just to maintain normal labs. For an example, just today I saw a man that was 38 years old, about 5'-6" tall and weighed no less than 250 pounds. He was on three different oral meds for diabetes, three different blood pressure meds, two psychotropic meds one for depression and one for anxiety, a sleeping pill and a pain pill for his bad back with a Big-Gulp drink in his hand (oh, but I'm sure it was diet soda). I thought to myself that in a PAW, he won't have a chance and neither will his family. This kind of patient is becoming more and more common. Oh, did I mention that he was on SSD due to his bad back? That's another story...

The reason I put this out is that there will be casualties, many, many casualties. Some from not having meds for these chronic conditions, some from addiction withdrawal, some from looters/gangs and others from fighting to save their homestead. How long will my patient above last, if he isn't shot or killed by looters? I don't know, but I'm thinking maybe 30-60 days after his meds run out at the most, and probably shorter then that when he needs to do something to put food on his table.

Your health WILL affect not just you, but your family and your group. They need you healthy and you need them healthy as well.

Get yourself and your family in shape. If you are on meds, get your doctor to ween you if you can, if not then get as many pills as you can for your chronic conditions. Learn if you can use alternative medicine instead of traditional medicine.

Prepare your mind for casualties. There will be death...are you prepared for that?

Matt, thanks for your post. It spurred me into putting into words what I have been thinking over the last few years. There are many other things to think about when you have death. Disease, flies, body bags, graves (manual labor to dig) and stench to name some. Things to think about....plus what Matt had said...are you prepared to have someone you love become a casualty? Try to prevent battles, try to prevent injuries, and try to prevent illness. Prepare yourself now!

    Glad you liked it:

Remember those on burial/body recovery detail are exempt from KP, cooking and medical duties. They get priority on laundry, bathing and immediate wound care.

    On to your post
Dental is a biggie too. I have 15 miles of bad road in there from what I learned too late as a young adult from having chronic acid reflux that eroded the enamel leaving alot of issues combined with bad hygiene, bad attitude and bad deployment diets and violence trauma resulting in damage. A tooth will kill you from infection and pain, yep pain that will drive you mad.

I see people every week that come in thinking they are in "good shape" that fight with some of the kids for 5 minute rounds thinking "aahhh it's just a kid" and not only do they usually get whooped, they usually look like a pile of human flesh at the end of it.

Caffeine is another big one and my big one right now. Being low on energy when cutting all that weight a few years ago, I started drinking more caffeine. I never have a problem sleeping nor have any crazy fits or anything. But having years ago went cold turkey I know that I'll be down with a severe headache for half a day, then my body gets over it. Yet another "addiction" a lot of folks don't consider.

As I've said in other post, there is a fairly high chance I will be a casuality and I accept that. Due to health issues (arthritis knees, hands, and wrist) and the health/mobility isssues of wife, fight and flight will be limited. I teach what I can and prepare for others who come after as much for myself. This isn't to say I will give up and let others down if I can help it.

And you are doing exactly what you should be doing and we all end up there, some sooner than others, which is why location and those passive defensive measure and outside the box thinking become more important. Trust me I'm getting older and family health issues recently have been a game changer but as long as we do all we can then no blame is to be had. A lot of what I wrote was for myself too

eventually we all become causalities......in some form or another, thing is to try and keep going and prolong your survival....i have no wet dreams about being " tip o da spear" like some in internet land..but i prep and continue to become as self sufficient as i can not only for me but my family.

In reality, any/all of us could or might be a casualty one day. To that end we have to also make sure our families can continue to function without us in a bad situation.

This includes things like treating us if we are the injured party, being able to know how to work some of the systems in place as well as the standard weapons handling, basic survival type stuff.

                  2 situations come to mind.
                  1. the greek question, which is will you go against big numbers to rescue your loved one from a burning building. (athens riots started that question)
                  2. the goose question, which is will you stay behind to slow/deter the overwhelming force which is coming in order to give your wife/daughter/son/team time to get out of danger so they can continue on another day. (daddy goose sacrificed self to predator so wife and children could escape)

i don't want answers to these questions here.... it could hijack the thread, but both situations are ones i've considered.. that would likely result in injury and death.
