I have been through it a few times. The first time was 25 years ago (or more) Compressions changed and the the way you tilt the head and a few small things. Most recently about five years ago. But it is a like any other training if you serious about it and using it, you need to train on it more often. Just my two cents

Recert annually according to the SOG's of our department for the annual OSHA refresher.
I also teach it as part of the community outreach program with the local EMS agency.
I am a Paramedic and my wife is an RN on her way to being a NP, it's kinda what we do.;)

I am taking a cpr/first aid/aed course this week. I haven't been to a class in over 20 years so I don't think I'll remember the difference of now and back then. I found this course through a local Vo-tech school and classes are two nights at a total of $60. Are you needing a refresher or just need to start somewhere? Try looking around your area.

Another thing for folks to ponder is the idea of getting trained in at least basic first aid. You can find courses (usually around $130 for First aid, CPR, AED) to teach you, at minimum, basic first aid. Many of these courses are available through the American Red Cross, your local EMS provider agency, local community college, or at town halls/municipal buildings.
Another thing to think of is the idea of joining your local volunteer fire/EMS agency. Thanks to the modern standars for fire and EMS personnel, you will get top notch training and experience in emergency situations. Volunteer agencies from coast to coast are hurting for membership and given the life we all choose to live, having those skills would benefit not only you but your community as well. The skills you learn are very transferrable to survival and preparedness. I know it is time consuming and time is short for us all BUT, many departments and agencies try to mix the family and department time in an attempt to make it easier for people to volunteer. In our Department one of the FF's wives owns a daycare business. She watches the kids while mom's and dad's go to training and calls. All of our kids are friends and they love going to the station. During social functions we are one giant family and for us, it makes a much closer Department.
Another great aspect is, you will be part of the Emergency or contingency plan for your local government. The benefit of that is self explainatory.

I finished my CPR/AED class and I am glad I spent the money and took the time to go. I took a CPR class some 20 years ago and there was a few differences in what I remember (or thought I remembered) back then and now...
Compressions were different, they were slower and not as many compared to how many breaths...
I don't remember any AED training back then..
Cell phones are everywhere, the ability to now have someone call for emergency service has reduced vital time in getting help.
I was the oldest 'student' in the class  ..
More training with using a breathing mask vs. mouth to mouth when giving cpr..

The instructor was a retired paramedic/EMS and he constantly reinforced two items.
1)'Scene afety'-When you are starting CPR/Firstaid is the scene safe? Try to determine what happened to the victim..were they shot, electrocuted, something fell on them..etc, Make sure the scene is safe before you give aid so you're not a victim too.

2)A term he used frequently was BSI, Body Substance Isolation. With all the communicateble diseases (namely AIDS) he stressed heavily on having gloves and a breating mask when giving breaths. Treat every persons blood as if it were infected.

Yep, I keep these masks in every medical kit I have, especially my vehicle kit... The only kit I do not have a mask in (mainly due to bulk), is the kit I bring in my day pack for when the family and I go for day hikes... I figure I am safe with wife and daughter...

I have seen pics of new style masks that are much smaller than the bulky ones I now own... Basically a sheet of plastic with a check-valved hose in the middle of it. I need to find some of these...

I'm current. Sadly my First Aid class was a joke. The teacher could have taught us so much, but he would rather tell "war" stories from his EMS days.

A solid force multiplier you are my friend. Glad you did it for yourself, your family and us
