  • Herbal remedies for after TSHTF

I would like to here from some of the herbal guru's on some supplements/herbal preps we could store now that may be beneficial after TSHTF. Here are a couple problems I have thought about that may need some treatment. Maybe it will be for someone in your group or a family member that shows up that you let into your fold.

    Headache/Migraines...

    Diabetes...

Muscle aches/pains (not necessarily oral, but maybe a rub or solution)...

Someone coming off an antidepressant such as Effexor, Zoloft, or Prozac. This may not be for depression, but for pain management as well...

    Let's start with these first.

    Thanks....

I have heard that Saint-Johns Wort helps with depression. never heard about the pain part

Very important topic, i started to prepare to study the subject a few years ago, but like so many other worthwhile projects life and the hustle and bustle of this 'present evil world' get in the way, or should i say i let it get in the way.

My biggest problem was trying to vet sources and find source of info i could trust.

That is my concern. There are many "sites" that say, get this...buy that...because I say it works. No reliable sources that I have found or know of. There are probably many reliable sources, but I don't know who to trust. Is there a "national organization" that writes standards? I would really like to learn more about the benefits of herbs. I have books on the subject, but would like to hear from those that "live and do it", than just read from a book. Even in traditional medicine, there are different ways to do things then are written in the textbooks.

I have seen a few people who i would trust but it hard to develop a relationship on line with someone before they seem to be driven off by people not willing to learn on other forums, or worse think they know everything and their way is the only way. imo

I recently read that oil of oregano is good for muscle spasms and pain. You rub it on the area. Also, boswellia is a good anti-pain, anti-inflammatory. My mom has fibromyalgia and has tried about everything prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal to control the pain. And has done a lot of research for her fb support group about pain control. I'm going to ask her what all she's come up with. Maybe it'll be helpful.

You have to be careful what you take, often when buying herbs you will be told what they work for but not what they could hurt, for instance St. John's Wort is not good for people with heart problems. I happen to have a heart that skips from time to time so was careful when I started trying herbal remedies.
I once grew feverfew and tried it in tea on a day when I had a bad headache, it didn't help at all.
I don't know about depression or diabetes(I suggest honey or stevia for a sweetener though).
What I do know is chamomile is wonderful for relaxation and sleep.
Basil or rosemary can be put in a bath to help with congestion.
Peppermint tea is great for a cough but will also cause diarrhea if drank too often (at least that is what it does to my daughter and myself).
I will put one other remedy here though it isn't herbal. It is one that my father was always given as a kid and always gave it to us when we had bad colds (my mother swears it saved my life when I was 2 months old) and that is the oil from chicken fat (cooled and sugar added for taste). I have had a lot of people make a face over this one but they just have to understand that the oil is why chicken soup is so good for you when you have a cold. Giving just the oil is just a more concentrated dose. My brother uses this with his child but I stick to the peppermint tea, lol.
If you grow your own herbs it is easy to harvest your own and keep them fresh. I usually harvest way more than I can ever use in one year.
I also meant to mention that nothing my doctor has told me has ever worked to help my heart skipping, what did work was more exercise and when it really gets going skipping a small leaf of motherwort chewed and eaten will stop it from skipping within about 15-30 minutes. It is something I researched before trying, of course.

Good info, Becky! My husband takes echinacea tea when he's sick and I think it helps. I usually take Vitamin C with zinc when I get sick and that shortens it by a couple of days. They say exercise helps with depression.

I use vitamin c at the onset of a cold or anything else. I used to get strep throat if i was in the same county with some one that had it. But since i take vitamin c at the first sign of scratchy or sore throat, i have not had strep throat in over 20 years.

The only problem i have found with taking mega doses of vitamin c is diarrhea that usually comes with it.

Good sources of vitamin C that aren't pills are: strawberry, raspberry and blackberry leaf tea and rose hip tea. (Not all rose bushes will make hips, you really need to plant the right kind. I have two Rosa rugosa on the hill by the house). And, of course, pine needle tea is a good source of vitamin C.

One important issue is how to identify and process the various plants needed to make these threatments. In the PAW, you can't go to the local health food store. Is there a good book anyone knows thats shows pictures of the plants and how to process them?

@HLorfing, are you from Mexico? I ask because the only people I know that consistently use CAPS LOCK, are classified government agencies for official use, and my Mexican inlaws... :)
