  • Another concern

We found out this week through our resource hospital that there is a SEVERE shortage nationwide of the Drugs Versed, Morphine, Fentanyl,Valium and Etomidate.
These drugs are used for pain management and for surgical procedures. We also use them in the field to treat head injuries and seizure patients.
The kicker is the reason. The FDA has placed such onerous regulations on the manufacturers that they have decided that it is no longer cost effective to make the drugs.
If you need surgery, GET IT DONE! There is no end to the shortage in sight and the medical directors in the area are scrambling to find alternative therapies for us when the drugs run out.
    Welcome to regulation nation!

Interesting- I actually used a "staff" bathroom recently at a major hospital while helping some extended family. They had something similar to this posted with an inventory of what the pharmacy was good on and what they weren't.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I use everyone of these at work almost on a daily basis. Not the only drugs that are on short supply. One of the reasons I have heard for the shortages, in addition to the above, is the drug companies don't make any money off of them. With all the heroin seizures the Gov't does, there is ample supply for Opiate based drugs ( such as Morphine). Why make cheap morphine when you can make VERY expensive cancer and AIDS meds and bilk the insurance companies? (Of course the insurance companies dont care they just raise our rates). I also know that Magnesium Sulfate, a smooth muscle relaxer used in respiratory distress and in pre- eclampsia (pregnancy issue) is in shortage. We cant keep the stuff in stock and its the only thing we have ( besides valium, potentially dangerous to baby) to treat seizures in pregnancy.

UPDATE: Hospitals in my area still out of above supplies. Overheard some nurses saying they needed "to knock a patient down" ( for intubation) and did not have etomidate or versed. Their only option was propifol (may be misspelled). Fine for the clinical setting, deadly at the neverland ranch. Also prob more cost for the patient!

            What is Propofol?

Propofol is a drug that reduces anxiety and tension, and promotes relaxation and sleep or loss of consciousness. Propofol provides loss of awareness for short diagnostic tests and surgical procedures, sleep at the beginning of surgery, and supplements other types of general anesthetics.

            How Used?

Propofol is for injection into a vein. It is given by trained anesthesia professionals in a controlled environment.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

We used Propoflo frequently at the vet clinic for quickly putting animals under, intubating them, then keeping them under with a general anesthetic. In fact, it was a favored drug for c-sections and any proceedure where we needed the animal to come to quickly.
