  • Antiseptic Ointment Recipe

I haven't made this yet, but thought it was interesting.

    Ingredients

    -1 1/2 ounces beeswax, grated
-1 cup olive, almond, or coconut oil
    -1/4 teaspoon vitamin E oil
    -1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil
    -20 drops lavender essential oil
    -10 drops lemon essential oil

Directions are in the link. I just wanted to show how simple the ingredients are.

Now this is interesting. My first reaction was mixed. Some of the ingredients, especially the oil, will not store for long periods so why not store the real thing. It would definitely be cheaper. I would also hesitate to put any of that stuff on an open wound.

On another note, Vick's Vapo Rub will cure toenail fungus. The ingredients of Camphor, Eucalyptus and Menthol kill fungus. It works!

That is odd, I thought I replied to this thread. Anyway...

I don't like using petroleum based products, unless I have to - I know it seems like it is in everything! I also found a recipe for a vapor rub that seemed interesting.

The lavender oil basically acts as a preservative. It's commonly used in herbal salve preps for just that reason. The tea tree oil is the basic antibacterial agent and works real well for that purpose, if you can tolerate the smell. Possibly the lemon oil counteracts that. Should be no problem using this salve.

I saw a recipe for one that used pennyroyal. But I hear that stuff can be toxic. Any info on that?

Pennyroyal is fine used topically. It makes a great flea collar for cats and dogs. Just slightly crush a bunch of leaves, wrap in a piece of cloth and tie around their necks. Not usually ingested in any form that I am aware of. I use the essential oil in my barn fly spray also.
