  • Basic medicinal herbs everyone should know about. Plantain Leaf and Yarrow

Ok, so this is my first of hopefully several posts on this subject so we'll start out with two herbs that are probably growing within walking distance of your place right now; Plantain and Yarrow.

Plantain and Yarrow are both great multi-use plants. Plantain Leaf is superb if you are ever out and about and find yourself stung or bitten by insects. You can grab a leaf, rub it in your hands till some juice runs and slap it right on the bite. It takes away pain, itching and swelling within a few seconds. It's also a great way to protect scrapes and cuts. I make a sting remedy by covering 1/3 cup of dried Plantain with 2/3 cup of apple cider vinegar. Let that sit for 2 weeks, strain and use it as you would the fresh leaf.

Yarrow is one of the best herbs to use fresh to staunch bleeding on small to mid size wounds. Both it and Plantain grow almost everywhere so when in need, find a bunch, crumble the whole flower, leaf and stem in your hands and pack the bleeding area with it. A cotton ball soaked in Yarrow tincture and placed in a bleeding nose will stop the blood flow quickly. Legend has is that Achilles used Yarrow to treat his troops during the Trojan war hence it's latin name Achillea millefolium!

I have (hopefully) attached some photos and they are easy to identify once you get to know them. There are other uses for these herbs as well and I will post more information about them if requested. Happy herbing!

Great first start, thanks. I like the pictures as that really will help trying to ID them. I'll have to watch out for these two.

I live in the southeast, does it grow here? In the sun or shade, wet or dry areas?

I look forward to future posts.

    Thanks again

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

You'll find Yarrow along road sides and disturbed areas. It prefers to grow in dry areas in full sun to part shade. Plantain thrives in areas where it is stepped on and is a common yard weed. You'll find it growing well where animals have been grazing and it likes to grow along side grasses and clovers. The new, young leaves are best. I would certainly think you would find both of these in your area. Thanks for the encouragement. I hope to hear from members in regards to specific ailments, ect they are interested help with.

Western Whit Yarrow is one of my favorites, because it's easy to I.D. in reading the books it was used for many things. Have you had any experience in using the purple colored root as a mild oral numbing agentfor toothache pain? I've read this but have no person experience, other than feeling a mild "tingle/funny feeling" when chewed.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Purdy sure that's Dockweed ol' son:

What say ye Okie? notice any of them with seed stalks?
The veins on Plantain run the direction of the leaf.

You aren't too far from me and the plantain we have in abundance has a smoother leaf.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribwort_Plantain Ours looks more like this - only not so tall since the drought!
The stalks with seed heads make it really easy to recognize.
