  • Herbal Trees

Not sure if you have seen these but Dave Canterbury (from show Dual Survival) has a seemingly decent Youtube channel (Wildernessoutfitters).

He did a couple of videos on Trees (Black Walnut and White Pine) which seem to be very good trees for medical uses:

    Black Walnut

    White Pine

He is on the right track, BUT, the number ONE rule of herbal medicine is NEVER use high heat, i.e. boil the material. High heat will destroy half if not more of the medicinal components of any herbal material. Always gently simmer when making teas or decoctions. Another thing to keep in mind is the "taste" - black walnut will really pucker one's mouth in addition to staining the tongue and teeth for a long while. Using black walnut liquid on the skin WILL stain the skin for a loooong while. Pine decoction usually is so bitter it is hard to swallow - it you cannot get it down, it will do your innards no good! Putting the resin on damaged skin, especially concentrated resin can really damage the skin tissues as it is so astringent and acidic for want of a better word - think turpentine! NOT a good idea to pour turpentine on an open wound, can lead to infection just as much as leaving the wound alone. But to each their own. I understand his reasoning about trees being available all year round over plants that die back in winter, but nothing says one cannot gather, dry, and store plant material in season to be used out of season.

      goatlady,

Thank you for your response... I had a feeling some important information was skipped over. You seem knowledgable on the subject, can you point me towards refernce sources to start learning this type stuff?

      Thanks,

Easy place to start is http://www.aussurvivalist.com/downlo...0Final%202.pdf

Chapter 8 is a very basic herbal course - different herbal preps, how to make, when to use plus a mini directory of the very basic important herbs to wildcraft and have on hand to handle most any illness IF there is no medical help available. Hope the link works - it's very old and my computer won't do PDF files lately! Free download, BTW, of the entire book which is also available in hard copy at Cafe Press for about $13. Another good basic book would be Louise Tenney's TODAYS' HERBAL HEALTH which I have used for my classes over the years. Good cross indexing of herbs to illness and easy to understand, and extremely accurate.

          Goatlady,

The link did not work for me... What is the name of the book/.pdf that you where trying to link... Maybe I could search for it?

I went and added "Todays' Herbal Health" which appears to be in its 6th addtion to my wish list.

          Thanks,

Dern, was afraid of that. The book title is Survival and Austere Medicine; An Introduction. It was written by a bunch of MD's, RN's, lab folks from a medical forum. They asked me to contribute Chapter 8 on herbal medicine preps. The main contributor is an Austrailian emergency room doc, hence, the aussie link, but guess he took it down after so many years.

Good discussion and helpful to me. I never tried these herbal medicines because I think they are not so much effective.

Many herbal preparations are Extremely effective, but one must know WHAT exactly one is treating and exactly WHICH herb is the best to use and in what form. Herbs work much slower in the body than conventional medications and herb have the propensity to treat a cause rather than a symptom which also makes it seem as if they are not effective. Takes longer to treat with herbs compared to "pills." Nowadays most folks want a "quick fix" so they think herbs don't work cause they usually are slow to show results.
