  • Potassium Iodide

I take a Kelp tablet once per day to help protect myself from radio-active iodide. You can get Kelp tablets at most health food stores.

Kelp is a source of a very small amount of iodide/iodine. The Japanese, because of the very large amount of seaweed/kelp which is in their diet, have an average intake of over 14 mg of iodine daily. They also have almost no breast cancer. There is a clear link between inadequate iodine intake and breast and other forms of cancer. Because of some faulty research published by a couple of lame scientists from UC Berserkly in 1948, the amount of iodine recommended for the American diet was about 400 ug with an upper safe limit of about 1.1 mg.
There is a wealth of information available at this site:http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/iodine.html
Personally I have purchased and use Lugol's solution which provides a couple of mg per drop which I put in a glass of water. It serves many good purposes, will purify water, and serve as a topical antibacterial agent as well as providing the necessary iodine. I purchase my Lugol's solution on amazon.
I seriously doubt that the Japanese population, though exposed to radioactive iodine, would ever be troubled by that radioactive element. There are other isotopes from this disaster which will affect them and perhaps ourselves in the future, which is not helped by iodine, but which can be dealt with by proper diet.
Miso, in particular, contains compounds which will scavenge out radioactive particles and cleanse your body. Seaweed/kelp also helps cleanse, entirely apart from its iodine content. There is a PDF book which explains a dietary approach to dealing with radiation. If the moderators wish, I could email a copy to them to make available for download. It came from an alternative doctor's website, and he made it available free, and requested that others email it to friends to reduce the bandwidth problems his site was experiencing.
        Sorry for the topic drift.

Kelp IS seaweed. Avaialable in many different dried forms, use like salt on foods, especially rice. Iodine is necessary for good function of the thyroid gland which regulates metabalism in the body. Potassium iodide specifically is collected in the thyroid gland and protects the thyroid from potential cancer causing radiation damage. Doesn't do diddly for any other body organ on that particular protection front.
