  • Stop the Bleeding

Well I have been training the kids and decided to put it on video. I have an overzealous mockingbird in the background that will probably become the first post STHF chicken soup. The wind is blowing as it always is and there is some dumb redneck narrating but it

    Thanks Matt.
I'll have to go to the Bro-in-laws to watch the vid's as our satelite internet is still screwy.
I recently purchased the Military IFAK kit from JRH and have one of those tourniquets and need some concept of how to use it.

Good vids Matt. Just a couple points to make if I could. When treating a sucking chest wound be sure to leave one side/edge of the plastic open so to not create a tension pneumothorax. Here is a good explaination on how to treat a sucking chest wound that I found that explains it clearly. http://www.brooksidepress.org/Produc...ChestWound.htm

Also in video 1 you spoke about the pressure point on the leg. The best one to use for the leg is the femoral artery which is found in the groin crease. Everyone should try and locate this on themself so they know where it is. You should be able to feel your pulse. This is a large artery (about the size of your pointing finger) and wll take quite a bit of pressure. I usually had best results using the heel of my hand and pushing quite hard. Remember you are trying to stop the bleeding or at least slow it down long enough to get either an effective pressure dressing in place or the tourniquet in place. Here is a chart of the pressure points http://www.tpub.com/content/neets/14...s/14191_21.htm.

Thanks for the videos Matt. They are helpful.

P.S. I think your wife was right....the neighbors probably would not have liked you to shoot their goat. LOL

Thanks for the videos. I have not seen that Isreali bandage before it looks a lot easier to use then the 90's GI style.

The Isreali bandage is good to have in your blow out kit as well as other FAK's. Also look at the Combat Gauze as well. http://www.z-medica.com/healthcare/P...bat-Gauze.aspx

Good videos Matt. Something you can try on the femoral artery is to use another bandage roll, leave it rolled up & place it over the artery and use another bandage to wrap/press is in place. This is only if you need to do something else. Although now that I read what I wrote I can't think of anything more life threating than a femoral bleed, but if you need your hands free.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

And also to you Matt, your link to managing sucking chest wounds was excellent.

Taste like chicken! Maybe you could make a training film on making goat jerky at the same time....sort of.... kill two birds with one goat.

Ok I out one together with the old style GI Bandage. The tourniquet application does not work as well because it is over the wound rather than between the wound and heart in the way I show it.
IF there is enough to wrap above the wound then that is where you would want it. It is also hard to tie down the tourniquet to keep your hands free as opposed to the CAT.
Practice folks, even if it is with gauze or cloth! Have the patient wiggle and yell as if it were real, throw some realism into it.

Ok I did a few videos at the beginning of this thread but I thought this information was important enough to come back into it and add on. I carry my CAT in my kit (insert shamless plug:) )which I won in a S&P contest from JRHEnterprises- http://www.jrhenterprises.com/produc...5&categoryId=2
which rides in my GMHB (also my hunting bag) always and is sitting by my side on my table when I teach at training sessions at our gun range as a line officer.
If there is a possibilty that time is critical when applying the CAT(DUH) or self treatment is a possibilty then the way it is carried is very important, as a paramedic I trust, showed me today during some training.

If you dont have this stuff I really recommend getting it and soon and get an extra bandage and use it for practice, bust out the CAT and practice, team up together and practice, go to a meet and greet and practice, go to a campout and practice, train monthly as some are doing and practice and oh did I mention one should practice?
