  • Are You Practicing Your Medical Techniques?

We like going to the range and don't think twice about shooting a couple hundred rounds with a cost of $50-$100. We like training ground fighting, Ju Jitsu, Close quarter combat, H2H, Pistol takeaways, etc. We like starting fires with a bow or flint and steel. We like hiking and "testing our gear", making a shelter with a poncho or tarp. We like camping in the elements (snow/cold, rain, etc) to see what we need to imporve on. We make faraday cages, paint our weapons, garden, raise livestock, make water barrels and use our water filters. Oh, the list can go on and on.

But....are you practicing your medical skills or are you going to get out your first aid book when your spouse has that sucking chest wound?

If you are not practicing your medical skills, you will be in trouble. In a SHTF world, I believe that we will likely use medical skills often, maybe daily. Sure they will be mostly minor stuff, but you may be called upon to clean, suture and bandage that gashing leg wound caused by that sharp axe that glanced off the wood you were cutting. Can you suture yourself, do you have the skills, equipment and antibiotics? Which antibiotic is best?

I bet you know which weapon you have will be best for that must have shot 300 yds away.

What about the simple stuff? Bandaging, treating minor burns, splinters, blisters, poison ivy, foot fungus, groin fungus, heat rashes, boils/abcesses, etc. What do you do for a sprain or strain? Do you have ibuprofen or is tylenol better? Can you tell the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke...if you can't, your patient is at risk of dying.

I bet you know which shelter to make when you need to stay dry and warm.

What about the stuff that will need to be done quickly?
Arterial bleeding....can you stop it? Do you know where the pressure points are to stop the bleeding?
Sucking chest wounds...can you recognize it? Can you treat it without going to a book as you won't have time. If you do it wrong you will kill your patient.
Fractures....Can you recognize if they have compromised their neurovascular status? What do you do if they have? Can you do it?
Burns...What do you do for severe burns? What compromises a severe burn?

I bet you know which knife to use when you want to skin that deer.

I only named a few and this is not a comprehensive list.
I would suggest that many of us like to practice what is fun (and I like that too), but we still need to practice the boring stuff as well. I would urge you to spend $25 - $50 or so and get some medical supplies for training and practice.

I would ask that you don't forget to train your medical skill set as it may mean life or death for you or someone you love.

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

ATTENTION: No trees or animals were harmed in any way in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were really ticked off!

Great question! The answer is a recent Yes but I am struggling getting my knucklehead boy to see the importance.

sucking chest wound? Practiced that alot in the Army. I went over it recently at work and with the son

clean, suture and bandage that gashing leg wound caused by that sharp axe that glanced off the wood you were cutting. Can you suture yourself, do you have the skills, equipment and antibiotics? Which antibiotic is best? I have added suture within the last few months to my kit. I always had an advanced kit in the Military. The antibiotics however are a weak point and confusing to me. I could use some simple mans help!

Bandaging, Check, cloth wrap, military bandages, tape etc.
    treating minor burns, Check-Celox
    splinters, Check-knife and tweezers
    blisters, Check-moleskin, triple antibiotic cream
poison ivy, Check- I have severe allergy, well versed
foot fungus, groin fungus, Check-I use the same medicines
heat rashes, Check-gold bond is beautiful stuff
boils/abcesses, etc. NO- I can lance an abcess and put a topical but thats about all I've ever done. It healed after that so i dunno what else to do. I also lanced my brown recluse spider bite and drained it. I found that little white lookin thingy in the center of the rot is called a nerve and if you grab it with tweezers and try and pull it out it causes other bodily functions! :(
What do you do for a sprain or strain? Splints, mobilty limits, wraps, cold compress, elevate etc
Do you have ibuprofen or is tylenol better? Good supply of 800mg Moltrin
Can you tell the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke I got good lessons from the Military and alot of practice too
Arterial bleeding....can you stop it? Celox, pressure points, torniquets, thats about as far as I can go
Do you know where the pressure points are to stop the bleeding?Yes, well most
Sucking chest wounds...can you recognize it? Yes as do most deer hunters wether they know it or not
Fractures....Can you recognize if they have compromised their neurovascular status? NO, I dunno what that is, got any suggestions?
Burns...What do you do for severe burns? Like 3rd degree, nope beyond my capabilities, got any suggestions?
What compromises a severe burn? Charred steak skin apperance beyond the blister level, sickning sweet smell of burned flesh(cant forget it, I try)

    I would love some help!

I wish I could say I do - but - in reality I don't. I do try and review medical techniques and treatments. I am fortunate in that I have BOOKS, BOOKS and more BOOKS showing treatments and techniques. But you're right - practice makes perfect.

Matt - you need book to keep in your medical bag.

Too much training needs doing and not enough time to do it... It is always the way for me... But I try to get it in wherever possible. Just recently re-inventoried the medical gear and updated the spreadsheet, which helps me re-familiarize myself with what is where... That is usually my shortcoming, I forget what is where. I do have a "contents list" printed out that helps a lot as long as I remember what the item is called... Doh!

Bottom line, I am strong on medical supplies but lacking in recent skills using it...

Some Hebrew Israelite friends are planning for a Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles ~ SEPTEMBER) training get-together week in northern TN near Kentucky border. Looking for some people to do emergency and armed conflict medical classes... Anyone have suggestions on who?
