It’s been a while since I’ve posted here due to ongoing issues getting online at home, so most of my access lately has been while traveling. That said, I haven’t been idle. I’ve taken the class I’ve taught over the years and turned it into a four-book series. I’m not getting any younger, and it felt like the right time to put some of that material into writing so it can be shared in a more accessible format than attending one of my classes.
Here is part of one of my books titled; The Survival Supplement Field Guide, Herbal Support, Tactical Health, and Supplement Protocols When the System Isn’t Coming
Why Supplements Matter When Healthcare Doesn’t Show Up
Let’s get something straight: this book isn’t a substitute for a doctor. It’s something you can turn to when you don’t have one—or when the system shrugs its shoulders and sends you home with a generic handout and a 3-week follow-up appointment you won’t survive to make.
In a crisis—natural disaster, grid failure, civil unrest, or just plain bureaucratic incompetence—you need tools that work. That includes supplements. Not trendy “detox teas” or some influencer’s 18-pill morning ritual. I’m talking about real, accessible, field-tested support that can help you stay alert, clear-headed, mobile, and functional when there’s no backup.
During my time as a Paramedic and PA, I saw it all: patients with no insurance, folks who lived hours from the nearest clinic, and people trying to stay upright long enough to take care of their kids or get back to work. And when modern medicine wasn’t available—or wasn’t enough—they needed simple, effective, affordable options.
This is part of Chapter 6: Mood & Mental Resilience
Ashwagandha, B-Complex, SAMe, Omega-3s
You don’t need to be clinically depressed to feel mentally wrecked. Sometimes it’s just life—stress, poor sleep, hormone shifts, burnout, or plain old chronic frustration.
But sometimes it’s deeper. Long-term isolation, lack of face-to-face connection, limited sunlight, no clear sense of direction—those things take a toll. Things like If you’re off-grid, homesteading, or facing a grid-down scenario. That emotional weight can build fast, especially when there’s no pharmacy, no therapist, and no backup.
You don’t need a prescription for every hard day. You need mental resilience—the kind that helps you get out of bed, make the fire, fix the fence, and deal with the situation without spiraling.
This chapter isn’t about making you euphoric—it’s about keeping you steady, clear-headed, and less likely to lose your cool when the power’s out, the meds are gone, and the dog just threw up on your only dry shirt.
Let’s talk about tools that support mood, memory, and grit—without numbing you or jacking up your system.
🌿 1. Ashwagandha (KSM-66 or Sensoril)
What it does: This is one of the best-studied adaptogens—herbs that help regulate your body’s stress response. Ashwagandha helps lower cortisol, improve sleep, and support thyroid and hormone balance.
Dose:
When:
🧾PA’s Perspective: This one helped my “friend” who used to wake up at 3AM mentally compiling a survival shopping list. With the right dose and timing, ashwagandha can smooth your stress response without flattening your personality.
Omega-3s (EPA-heavy blend)
What it does: Critical for brain function, mood stability, and reducing inflammation. EPA (not just DHA) plays a major role in serotonin signaling.
Look for:
When: With food (preferably with fat)
🧾PA’s Perspective: I’ve seen mood and focus improve in both patients and peers once they added in a good omega-3. It’s subtle, but it adds up—especially in high-stress environments.
