DIY emergency candles

I found instructions on how to make an emergency candle so I tried it out yesterday. I used crisco vegetable shortening, but you can probably use any brand you prefer.
Take a small can and stick a wick in the center of it. Then pack crisco in around the wick to fill up the can. Trim the wick down to 1/4 inch and light it.
You can make a large candle using the whole can of crisco or make smaller candles using cat food cans, soup cans or whatever cans you happen to have around your house.

Try floating a wick i bacon grease, or some vegetable oils. This is what is sometimes refered to as a 'Betty lamp". Same principal that many cultures used before candles. Good for you to practice these things.

Made a candle this weedned works great. also made fire startes with cotton ball and vaseline and hand germ killer stuff works great also.

Do both. Learn how to make them so you know and buy some at DG when you don't have time to make them. Best of both worlds.

Hadn't thought about cat food cans. We go through 5-6 per day.

Heres my hack. Instructables is packed full of cool projects. I really enjoy this web site. Make candles, oil lamps, etc. from many, many things.

the great thing about fat lamps is that they burn any fat...crisco, lard, or deer tallow you saved from your last deer! Even used motor oil burns in the liquid fat type lamps (smoky, though).
