  • Dutch Oven Cooking Get Together

My family was invited over by "Hit and Miss" for an afternoon of fellowship and dutch oven cooking. The menu was chicken and dumplings, a mix with potatoes, onions and green beans as well as brownies and a cobbler. We learned several things in the process and got to enjoy some great company.

    We did "stack cooking"

I was supprised that we only used 1/2 bag of charcoal. It's a good thing they were doing it cause i woulda had a bonfire going!

Half a bag of charcoal? Now that is an extremely usefull bit of information. I'm with you, I would have had a roaring fire going. By the way, how long did it take for the various items to cook?

We preboiled the chicken because we wern't sure but it took about an hour and half for everything and we had time to cook the chicken so we will probably do it all the way next time in the pots. We just wernt sure. I've cooked alot of stuff but never in dutch ovens, it was impressive and now i have to get 2 of them per the CSM Wifes instructions:) hehehehe my evil plan is working

It was neat, you can see it in the pics, they knew what they were doing, whole lot better than my caveman shove a stick in it and hand over the fire stuff.
The "legs" allowed for the stacking

This was a lot of fun and turned out great. I think we all learned a little something new. As a side note, the cobbler got a little too done on the bottom, it didn't affect the taste but made it a little hard to clean the oven. I don't want to scrape the bottom of my oven and ruin the "seasoning" so after getting all I could out, I put 2 or 3 cups of water in it and placed it on my stove top to boil. That loosens stuck on residue which can then be easily cleaned off.

My step dad used to only cook with cast iron, that was before they got married, now that she does most of the cooking I don't know if they still have the cast iron skillet.

Matt, glad ya'll had a good time. Lodge cast iron is good stuff, been using it for years. Make sure that you buy the type with legs and has a lid that is recessed. It's hard to stack coals on a rounded lid. Dutch oven cooking is great, and I don't know of anything that can't be cooked in one. Experience as with any other learning process will help you adjust the temperatures both upper and lower. It's suprising how little charcoal or wood coals are needed to do the cooking.

Lodge will have outlet stores in some of the outlet malls, if you ever travel on the interstates check them out. Learning how to season cast iron and clean it is a big part of enjoying it. Hope you get some and enjoy it.
