  • Tried something new

Yesterday, I decided to try something new. In a PAW, there will be no stores and little to buy or sell, so I tried to make something that I would normally buy at the store.

It wasn't a great endeavor, but it sure made me feel good.

Using a recipe that Momma_32 had, I made from scratch, tortillas. They turned out out decent and we had them with supper last night.

The point of all of that was to say this: when the SHTF there will be a lot of things that you and I will have to do for ourselves, and the time to learn how is now, when if you screw the pooch badly, you won't starve or be killed.
Pray for Obama, Psalms 109:8. Before you judge me, look it up.

I think my tin foil is too tight.

This is the mantra essentially learn now.

Thanks for reminding us (me especially) that just collecting and storing is not that good if you don't know what to do with anything.

Good job, even if you never have to do in a shft scenario you have a good new skill.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

There is a tortilla press that you can get for about $25.00. I'm getting one so that I can quit giving my kids wide geography lessons. (funny state/continent shaped tortillas) although it makes for great table talk and laughs.

It just takes practice to make nice tortillas. I actually photographed my first "good" one!

The first time I made them was because I forgot to buy tortillas at the store. I have only bought a package or two since.

On kind of a similar note but a little off track I decided to try something last night. We've all heard of CVP (Concentrated Vegetable Protein) that's in the commercially available LTS food. When I decided to do some research on it I found TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein). Where CVP is powdered like flower, TVP is granuled like some dehydrated chicken stock (bulion replacement) and reconstitutes sort of like loose hamburger (but not quite).

Since, in a SHTF scenario, most of us will be eating a lot of CVP, I decided to give the TVP a try. I made beef/TVP soft-shell tacos last night. I made the shells out of the recipe above and instead of using a pound of hamburger per our normal recipe, I supstitued 1/2 of the hamburger with the TVP. Those were the only two variances from my normal recipe. The family liked my odd-shaped tortillas (laughing through most of the meal) and loved the taco filling. This was a way to introduce the vegetable protien into the family's diet without the total carnivore withdrawal (it's also less unhealthy and cheaper). I'll also probably be buying a tortilla press in the near future :-)

You do realize that TVP is made primarily from soy and approximately 90+% of all soy is now grown from GM seed? If it matters not to you, fine, but many here will not use any product that is made from GM veggies.

Just curious...what about the CVP that's in the entrees (like Wise Foods, Gourmet Preserves, etc.)? Is that also made of GM soy? Just wanna know what to stear clear of :-)

I tried researching the CVP and could find nothing definitive except it is consolidate vegetable protein and can be made from soy as well as other veggie proteins, but no others were given. For my purposes I just assume it's all soy and I stay away from it. I also cannot digest it well at all - gives me intestinal upset every time I tried it. I figure if I want protein I will eat my canned meats and indulge in dairy a bit more.

The other thing to keep in mind is that soy mimics estrogen. Also, if you have thyroid issues, then it's best avoided because it will negate thyroxine. i.e. use it long enough, and you will start having symptoms of low thyroid. Just a few things to think about....
