  • Dried cherries

spent several hours this morning picking and preparing cherries from our tree. I'm trying some in the dehydrator. Not sure how it will work as they are very juicy. Also put up several pints of pie filling. I'll let you know how dried cherries work out.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I just got some cherries at a great price, but I can't decide if I want to can them or dehydrate them so I can't wait to hear how the dried cherries come out!

I Dehydrated some cherries last year. They worked out well. Just takes a little longer.

So the cherries are finally done. It took 5 days with the dehydrator plugged in and 2 days just sitting (was gone over the weekend & didn't want to leave plugged in). The gallon of Raniers is now reduced done to 1/2 of a sandwhich bag, but the taste very good. I'm not sure that all of the water is gone so I will store them in the fridge, as I think there may be a chance that they would mold.
The dehydrator tha tI have is a $5 buy from Goodwill and is just a set of racks and a small electric element, no blower. So maybe a better unit would work faster & better.
I'm also not sure that all of the work was worth the end results. It may be better to can them in a grid down situation if you have fuel to burn, etc.
The pictures I took really didn't add much to the story.

I never tried to store cherries because I think it will not in good taste after drying or distilling these cherries. But I heard that I can make jam from them and add them in the jam.

Dried sweet cherries taste wonderful, better than raisins, and can be used the same as raisins. Excellent way to store LOTS of vitamins and minerals.
