  • katadyn filter... the big one.

    jrh,
    at the florida "Campfire campout"
someone brought a very large, very heavy duty plastic water filter.
the owner said he'd used it for 5 years? i think? for his family.
    was that you? anyhow...

i've looked at your website for this unit. i see item 8002. is this the same unit that was at the florida campout? if so, it looked a lot more substantial in person than in the picture.

just checking as we are considering buying one like i saw at the campout.
    thanks.

Hey RR. Yep that's the same one. The little pic doesn't really do it justice. Filtered pond water there at the campout with it and used that over the course of the weekend.

    TRK drip filter, same model.

The one I brought was our home unit, I keep two filters and a plug in there.

The new units come with THREE filters.

10-13,000 gallons per filter TIMES three filters is a LOT of water.

Just like the discussion we had regarding PRICE of filter versus COST PER GALLON of water filters-

A "Hiker" model filter- it's $20-30. less initially than a Katadyn Mini filter. The "Hiker" does about 200 gallons and then you have to pony up $30 or so for a replacement filter.

A Katadyn "Mini" filter- it's initially $20-30 more than the "Hiker." The Mini filter does about 2,000 gallons (10 TIMES the amount the Hiker does), with replacement filters similarly price.

    Which is the better VALUE?

To do 2,000 gallons with the "Hiker" would cost you approximately $340. dollars- Filter plus NINE replacement cartridges

To do 2,000 gallons with the Katadyn Mini filter would cost you just the initial price of the filter- about $105.

Also, the Katadyn Ceramic filters- the only type JRH carries- are all natural filtration. NO CHEMICALS added. Carbon, charcoal, iodine, etc. are used in various other hiking style filters. OK for the occasional weekend hike, but what could happen when those chemicals build up in your body when you have to use the filter EVERY DAY, DAY AFTER DAY for how long in the PAW?

And that my friends, is why JRH only carries the original Ceramic filter element Katadyns :)

Oh, and the TRK drip filter is on sale-

    So's the Mini filter

We just ordered the Katadyn Vario filter. Has anyone used it and have any feed back on it. We got it as a start to make sure we have something, next we want to get the base Katadyn unit. Havent figured out which one yet.

Is the Vario is a chemical based filter???

Katadyn bought Pur in 2000 or so IIRC. That's how they got into the chemical filter business, before that the "combi" was the closest thing to a chemical filter Katadyn made.

I have three Minis now and may add a fourth from JRH. I also have two Pocket filters. Katadyn is a great unit and you will not be disappointed.

We stick with the ceramic- all natural- filtration models.

People tout the chemical based filters for "removing taste" but I've filtered a lot of crap water through Katadyn's over the years and never had a problem with "taste."

folks i delayed ordering for a while. (getting finances organized!)
filter rec'd. as presented by jrh. guys from florida campout -- this is the same unit that was presented there.
except that this unit has a third filter. i've been busy at work and just now putting it together.
i like what i see- solid-- the unit at florida had been used for 5 years of steady use...

i'd rather have 249 on my credit card.. and have a filter in the kitchen!! clean water.. high on my priority list.

Be sure to run a couple gallons through and throw out the first couple gallons of water RR.

Ceramic type filters usually have some residual dust from the manufacturing process on the outside of the filters.

It will not hurt your filters to start using them.

                        Thanks again
