  • Hello From North Carolina

    Hello All,

I'm a Prepping, Survivalist, Backpacking, Gun Owner, Reloader and Hunter.
Started keeping a 3 month food cache in '85 and have gradually increased that to a full year.

To economize my long term meat storage, I recently bought an All American 921 pressure canner. My goal is to reduce my reliance on a freezer to zero and save money by buying bulk meat and canning it myself. Commercially canned meats are getting too expensive.

In my book, the old ways are usually the best. Especially when preparing for an energy starved SHTF scenario.

      Hello Friar,

Just curious, but about how long does your canned meat remain good? Do you add any preservatives?

          Hello Kirk,

Home pressure canned meat should last at least one year. I rotate my stocks so that I never exceed a year on the shelf.

I do not use any preservatives, additives or spices when canning meat, just meat and broth. Found that the canning process amplifies the flavor of spices and now I season the meat when it is being prepared to eat.

According to some, home canned meat's shelf life is the same as store bought. That being 2 to 5 years if the seal is not broken. Canned meat is not a "seal and forget" item like rice, beans and wheat. Home canned items should always be rotated along with your regular food items to ensure optimum freshness, texture and nutritional content which all degrade over time.
