I am the same "Stephen" who was very active on another popular preparedness forum several years ago. I've been at this long enough to have gone through several phases. I've gone from the "Zombie Apocalypse TEOTWAWKI" phase, to where I am now - mainly concerned about the future of my descendants and making sure that my grandson gets a good education even though there may be no schools or internet by the time he is old enough (he isn't quite a year old yet). Tip: Goodwill is a great source for building your reference library.
Our family is fairly focused on general self-reliance and homesteading as a life-style. We have 240 square feet of raised bed garden, several assorted garden areas (including a nice sweet potato patch), chickens, and a hand-pump well. I'm past the point of "Opsec" that some folks are concerned with - I've been writing a blog about gardening and chickens for a couple years, so it's pretty much all out there for anyone to see anyway.
I'm also very interested in Southern culture (not a topic for this forum, so that's the first and last mention of it from me) and I write yet another blog on the topic; I also am a national level staff officer of a Confederate heritage organization.
Even though I've been at this since Boy Scouts in the early 1960's and got really serious about it in the pre-Y2K years, I'm mainly here just to listen and learn. I'll try to add my thoughts where I can - I've made plenty of mistakes along the way that might help someone avoid wasting time and money as I have done. Here are some areas that I've probably got more than the average level of experience in, and might be able to help others with:
