  • Hello from NW Arkansas

I live in NW Arkansas, I am a US Marine (left active duty, now a Reserve Marine) and a husband and father. I am what some would call a newbie prepper, though I've been interested in better preparing my family for a disaster for a while now, but just cannot seem to get the wife on board, she thinks that I am being paranoid.

My preps are more for harsh winter weather making it impossible to get to the store for food (we have been a "go to the store for dinner every day" family for a long time) and financial harship making feeding three kids difficult. I would like to eventually move to a place where I can have a decent garden and a severe weather storm shelter for my wife's sanity in the late spring storms that we always get. I am always looking for new ideas and like minded friends.

Hello Mac! Welcome to the forum from another Arkie! You're dead-on about storms up here. Went w/o power for 11 days in '09. No problem, I was prepped. Wife has been on board ever since. Maybe a good ice storm will help you out with your wife. This farm is so dry right now I would welcome any kind of moisture now, even ice!

Thanks for your service in the Marines! I spent 6 years in the Army myself, seems like about 100 years ago. Old Dog Face salutes old Jarhead! Ha! I tried to go in the Marines, but when they found out I had completed the 3rd grade, they told me I was "over qualified!" Ha! It never ends, does it! Recruiters for all branches have the best jokes about inter-service rivalries!

    Again, welcome aboard!

Greetings! For you wife, you need to approach it from the angle of taking care of the children. Nothing scares a woman more than the thought of not being able to feed her child. The other thing that I recommend in having her read "One Second After." It is not the kind of book I normally read (I love science fiction/fantasy stuff), but I was assigned this book in my Comp I class. It really changed how I look at things. Even now, my thoughts on why I am prepping are evolving. At first it was an EMP type event (the basis of the book), but now it is a more of a general outlook, with an emphasis on the steady slide of the economy.

Another good angle for your wife might be that having food on hand saves money. When you don't have to buy groceries every day or even every week, you can use your grocery budget to stock up on sale items.

Welcome to S & P we are glad you are here. Lots of good people and info here.

Do a quick search before asking your question, we have talked about a lot of things so it might be covered.

Include meta tags on threads you start so that they will be easier to search for.

Check out the blog articles there is some good info there.

Look on youtube for videos made by PAW Productions - delta69alpha and also Survival Report.

Lastly share your experience with the rest of us.

Look around on the forum for more info about bringing spouses onboard, I like to point out all the natural disasters to people and that helps get them thinking. I think there are also some podcasts on this subject.

Welcome Mac! You live in a part of the country I've spent some time in, and probably go back to someday...good luck with the missus, she'll come around I'm sure.

Welcome. I think you are on the right track get prepared fro small events first, then work on longer term goals. Like others have said maybe you can show the wife how buying in bulk can save money, etc. good luck.

We still have a farm in NW Arkansas. I love it but our family is all here and family is more important than the land. GB

                      Welcome to the forum.

I can see how trying to prep without the wife on board could be a big problem. Maybe pointing out the little things over time will bring her around.

My wife has always been a prepper. I am blessed in that regard.
