  • New from TN

Hello, I'm from the edge of middle Tennessee. First and foremost I'm a Christian, husband and father, in that order. I have been interested in homesteading, prepping and survival since I was old enough to read. I've had a garden for the past 4 years and am planning on expanding it this year. I do a semi-square foot garden with 2 4x4 raised beds and 1 3x8 raised bed. This year I'd like to add a 15 ft bed to expand my tomatoes and peas. We also collect rain water in our rain barrel and do our own composting. I have also hunted since I was 4. My dad used to take me duck hunting and would carry me inside his chest waders until I was about 6 and then he bought a canoe and would paddle me in with him. I starting doing the actual hunting around 8. We mainly hunted duck and dove, but now we're more rabbit, squirrel and turkey hunters. I have been deer hunting a few times and would like to get into that as a means of putting more meat in the freezer.

My wife just had our first baby a couple of months ago and that has really put me into overdrive. We decided we wanted her to be a stay at home mom and go from gardening and hunting for fun/hobby to a means of providing for the family. We're a bit different from most of our friends that are our age as we don't have grand ideas of being rich or the desire to have a monster home. We're happy in our little house on our smallish lot. We would like to one day have a few acres in the country, but are content where we are. We desire to live simply and make do or do without. This not only frees us from a lot of unwanted stress, but allows us to give more freely.

That being said, I'm glad I found this place and I hope I can give more than I take and learn as much as possible along the way.

You sound like the kind of guy I'd like to have a cup of coffee with sitting out on the porch.

Welcome. I would tell you to stick to the homeschooling plan. My spouse and I made that decision several years ago and are very glad we did. She was a stay at home mom and it was difficult the first few years without her income, but worth every penny we didn't have. Hang in there though and you, but especially your children, will be Blessed by the decision.

We actually had this talk over the long weekend. My wife's mother is a retired teacher and we will talk with her over the Thanksgiving holiday about it. There are quite a few folks in our class at church who homeschool as well so we will take their advice too. We are definitely leaning toward home schooling and at the least, a Christian school.
