Been in the preparation mindset for a long time. Recently moved to Jacksonville and had to change situational preparations to include hurricanes and re-think my shelter-in-place. Also looking to build on my knowledge and contact with regional experts.
Raised in the woods of Pennsylvania, (think hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, etc.), I am building on my interests to include field expedient medical training, (more than just your local Red Cross first aid class), as well as other training that contributes to self reliance.
When feces impact the rotating oscillator, best to know what the cavalry can and can't do. Looking into local CERT training as a way to connect with like-minded folks and, when I can, lend a hand to ease suffering.
For me, it is all about practical application of knowledge.
While I love gear, I've dog-eared a page from Dave Canterbury's "common man" approach to seek those things that truly work. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things that have earned their rightful place on the tops of gear lists because their name is legendary. That said, I humbly subscribe to the idea that the more I know, the less I need.
While I take planning and preparations seriously, I also like to have fun. As a father, I have lots of good reasons to keep it together. Nothing is better than when I can take my interests, distill them down to what a child can comprehend, and impart that knowledge. It keeps the grass as green as I'd like on this side of the fence.
I look forward to learning and sharing with this group.
