  • Hi from the Ms Gulf Coast

    Hi to everyone
A very short piece about me...I am new to all of this, except cooking and camping, now that I know well. Prepping for whatever may come, the stockpiling, learning how to live without internet *gasp* or power and all the modern conveniences is a completely foreign concept; however one that seems like a very smart idea. Facts are facts, anything can happen and if some terrible disaster does occur well I need to be able to take care of my family. So this all just makes sense. Besides, it never hurt anyone to learn something. :D

So that being said, I look forward to discovering even more than I have already...and maybe somewhere I will pick up on the difference between and AK and an AR...hey at least I know what a shotgun, a riffle and handgun are.

AR / AK is a personal choice, does not make a big difference either way... You point it at something and pull the trigger and they will put holes in it. If you are shooting at something they are going to be running, not checking if it is an AR or an AK.

But to help with you decide what your personal prefernce might be:

Do you change your oil every 3K miles or do you wait 10K or never changed it?
If you maintain your car well then get an AR... If you did not even know you should be changing your oil in your car then get an AK.

Do you have a mild case of OCD and try to get things just so?
Well if you want an exacting peice of equipment that can shoot expert at a comp then get an AR.

            Do like history?
If you like history then get either one... Both have a long history of serving their masters well. AK's history is a little longer.

            Do you like "Bling"?
Get an AR... More "hop up parts" than a Civic.

But really both work well and both are very popular for good reason.

            Good Luck,

We are in the Biloxi area (at the moment), though currently searching for land to purchase within the next 6 months or so, hopefully.

Thanks for the information on the equipment. I was being a bit sarcastic, though honestly I know very little about that style of weapon. I was handling a 357 snub-nose police special Smith and Wesson at age 12..as well as a 12 gauge and hunting rifles.

We simply had chosen not to have weapons in our household, until recently due to one of our children that is now grown and living on his own. Until recently, the last month or so, I had never really considered having weapons at home as necessary as having food, water, shelter and all of the other things we store. Though after working on an assignment for school and recalling how people behaved in the after math of hurricane Katrina, I have reevaluated my opinions and will be teaching my own younger children more about firearms now.

Welcome from Nortern KY, I appreciate your working with the children to prep them in caring for themselves. (other posts)

                  Thanks and Hi

I look at it like this, the entire point of prepping and all of this really is survival, for me it means more to me that my children survive than anything else. So teaching them to use what they have, is the best way to ensure this. The rest is out of my hands and I must trust the Lord to see to their safety.

We are taking them camping for a large portion of the summer to let them experience what it would be like to not have cable, AC, net and a large flat screen to keep them entertained. Jumping in the lake to swim, fishing, traipsing through the woods, cooking over the fire and battling the monstrous mosquitoes of the Gulf of Mexico is going to be their entertainment this summer, unless some disaster (aka another katrina) strikes and we head up to the DH's moms place...100+acres of remote mountain could make for an interesting and educational summer as well.
