  • Hello from Chandler Arizona...

I have hunted and camped all over AZ for the last 33 years and I feel confident in just about any survival situation outside of an urban setting. Unfortunately, I spend the majority of my time in an urban setting.

To resolve this shortcoming I have been actively involved in a preppers group here in the East valley for a little more than a year now. The group is lead by some very knowledgeable and seasoned preppers who have been a great resource. The number one thing I have learned is how much I do not know and how ill-prepared I am for an bug-in. Things have improved dramatically over the last year but there is always more to learn and do.

I am particularly interested in learning about alternate power sources, HAM radio, canning, and long term storage for food and water. In return, I offer what I know about reloading, firearms, knives, camping, trapping, skinning, and outdoor survival.
"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Mine is still relatively young and in no mood to move out of the urban setting. (She likes her shopping malls.)

Living in the Valley of the Sun presents some rather difficult obstacles to shelter in place or bugging out. First, we live in the middle of a desert and it's pretty difficult to survive without water. Any disruption to the power grid will result in the valley's water supply coming to an immediate stop. Second, due to the few routes in and out of the valley, the migration of non-preppers is going to make leaving near impossible in the short term so that is why I have decided to shelter in place for 3-6 months. I figure storing 3 - 6 months of water would be easier than getting stuck on the I-17, I-10, or US-60. Third, living on the border presents problems with narco-gangs and terrorism so any plans will need to contend with those threats as well.
