I found this site in the sigline of another member from a different board and this looked like a nice, small community of like minded folks.
I've been into S&P for about a decade. About 7 years ago I made the decision to move off-the-grid and build a ranchito down on the US/MX border. This wasn't just for S&P reasons. I grew up a country boy in the midwest, tried to live a suburban/city lifestyle and just couldn't do it. What started as simple off-the-grid living has evolved into a micro ranch/farm.
My S&P mindset is geared towards long term sustainability. Instead of preparing to react to a certain situation I lean towards eliminating potential problems. To me planning to survive, thrive and be prepared is just part of life and not something that only comes into play 'when the balloon goes up'. To me that means reducing reliance on unsustainable things, people and systems and replacing them with reliable things, people and systems. I don't believe in shortcuts, but I do strongly believe in being efficient.
I've hunted all over North America. Horsepacked in the Rockies as far north as Montana and down into Sonora, MX (though not in the same trip :)). Anymore I mostly stick close to home mainly hunting bear, lion and doing damage control for local farmers and ranchers. I've helped with some medium sized farming operations and have done some cowboying. I have experience with small scale solar and wind power. Have dealt with more gensets than I care to think about and am a general tinkerer that prefers to build over buy.
I'm not an expert in any of this mind you. If my experience has taught me anything it is that I have a whole lot left to learn about everything. Which is what brings me here. I look forward to sharing and learning with you folks.
