  • Just starting in the Mountians of NC!

I live in Western NC in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

I have known something is wrong for a long time but tired to keep my head in the sand, then my wife got pregant and I wanted to focus and enjoy that happy time and tired to bury my head further. As my daughter now approaches 2, I am no longer able to force my eyes shut nor do I now want to.

I have started talking with my parents and getting a plan together for our families.

Currently I am in the infant stag, as I am gathering the parts for a few B.O.B.'s. I feel a BOB is the logical first step... My thought is if we can not survive the first few days then what good is a years supply of food as I would be stocking food for other surviviors to loot. But it is taking longer than I thought trying to gather the parts of for a few Suburban B.O.B.'s (I made note of Suburban because I feel it is different from what say a Urban or Rural B.O.B. would be) for the families.

I must make a B.O.B for me I (which must cover my daughter) and then one for my wife (which must cover my daughter) and then tring to helping my brother and parents with their bags... because they still think storing food is enough.

I hope to use all of you as resource when as I make this plan of prep for what-ever may happen.

    Thank you,

            Thanks for the welcome...

I have already watched a few of the PAW production videos, and they are good stuff. I really liked the ones where they showed opening old stored food.

Every night lately I have been watching an hour or two of videos and doing lots of reading... Both on everything from Wilderness Survival to Gear Reviews to Modern Combat Tactics to First Aid to Seed Harvisting. I am on infromation overload. So many views, and so many choices... Of all the different views and thoughts the only common theme is that we need to prepare for what ever the Future holds no matter Man Made or Nature... Nuclear or Civial War... Martial Law or Black Out.

Yep still have the feeling sometimes :) It comes and goes. Start off with the basics. This a lifestyle change...doesn't happen over night...not only will you change your purchase habits but you will also change your way of thinking. A Lot of the people here have been doing this for years and decades for some. Break it down for yourself...you need water, food, 1st aid, and security.

Water - either buy some jugs and fill up or buy some bottled water...get you enough for a few days to start.
Food - canned goods is a great place to start...PAW productions has a vid on medium term foods...again get enough for several days then build up from there.
1st aid - get some kits and few extras of gauze and triple antibiotic
security - you are already thinking about this so no need to rehash for now but you will build more on this later.

Got to remember to practice what you are learning, look at Matt in Oklahoma's sig line. Eat what you store, store what you eat. 2 is 1 and 1 is none, got to have backups.

I got some 6 gal water jugs from Kmart to help me get going on having water in the house. Wal-mart sells Mountain house pouches that would be great for a BOB. Try them out at home before you stick them in your BOB, no sense in putting them in your bob if you can't stand to eat it.

We are here to help each other so be sure to share your experiences. When you get enough posts (& time on forum) you will get access to the members forum where there are more vids.

welcome from West Georgia. As every journey starts with a single step, so does your preparedness plans. You're better off today than you were last week. Hang in there.

Welcome sir. You have came to the right place. When I first started this years ago I only cared for wilderness survival since I am a backpacker, never thought of TSHTF or LTFS, etc. Now I have a family of 4. Since coming to this site my eyes have been opened to a lot more than what I was already doing.

Elittle and Grand said it best. They have laid an outline for you.

I suggest reading Lights Out, One Second After, Normal, and Patriots.
Get Carla Emerys Encyclopedia of Country Living, a Field Guide to Plants for your area, and the SAS Manual.

                          Those will help you also.

But stay at it, these people here are great and will answer any question you have.

                            Thanks everyone!

More reading, more videos! I actually like this kind of "research".

                            WiseOwl,
The Encyclopedia of Country Living has already arrived and my "wish list" already included the guide to plants and SAS manual and I beleive will be in my next purchase.

                            Grand58742,
Thanks for your posts... I really needed the part about "don't get Gear Happy"... I am a gear nut.
